  • I broke my elbow

I tripped on a curb and caught myself on a concrete wall hyper-extending my arm and breaking off 1/3 of my radial head, tore my ligaments off. I had surgery to repair my elbow saturday and right now am trying to make fists. I have a hospital gown I'm using as a shirt because it snaps up the arm. Doctor gave me a second one. Right now I'm waiting on insurance to authorize the brace the doc wants me to have that will immobilize my arm at 90 degrees.

It's a bit late for the advice "don't do that", isn' it?

Take care of yourself, and I hope your arm mends completely.
    Seshat's self-help guide:
    1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Yes I can move my shoulder, and using my other arm as support raise my arm over my head a few times a day so my muscles don't shrink and I have to spend more time in physical therapy afterwards than I would if I left my arm at my side the whole time. Gotta stretch those muscles or else I will need pt to brush my hair.

Oh, ow!! I gave myself tendonitis in my elbow moving, but that's nothing compared to you. I hope dressing isn't too difficult.

                Here's to quick healing!

Just reading what you wrote made me wince... owowow That is one painful and annoying injury. It's amazing how fast muscles and tendons go stiff and shrink, a good physio therapist will make a huge difference once you can move your elbow again.

Get well soon! Here's a little blue pill <> to get your arm up.

Ow. Never thought of breaking an elbow, it's a joint. I know with ball joints you can - break shoulder/blade/socket/knob, hips the same. I know knees can break but just didn't think elbows did.
Hugs and lots of ibuprofen! Oh, don't try to learn ASL now lol

Had my follow up with doctor. Apparently I was supposed to be working on my range of motion. I have about a week to get my range of motion back or else its locked. IE flipping my hand over to palm up and flat down like typing. I'm working on it, but IT HURTS!

Been there, done that - just keep working it gently more or less all the time for a while. For a few months I tended to sort of gently waft my hand around while watching TV [or I was told that is what it sort of looked like.] When it got seriously sore, I ran a sink of water as hot as I could take it and added epsoms salts - a 15 minute soak helps a lot. And always take your NSAIDS.
