  • Private event means closed.

    Quickie from Sunday night:

I play Dungeons and Dragons at a little sports card/CCG store one town over. The store closes at 5pm and we usually get started around 5:30.

A couple of guys were running late so it was about 5:45. I was getting set up (I'm the DM) and this guy wanders into the store. Normally we'd lock the door but as I said, a couple of players were running late.

The store owner sees the guy come in and this conversation ensues:

Owner: I'm sorry, sir, the store is closed for a private event.
    Guy: I'll just browse, then.
Owner: Sir, the store is closed. We're having a private event.

The guy looked a little miffed but didn't say anything and left.

I love how people need to be told twice.

I had this happen at a place here in town that sells hobby stuff and swimwear. One sunday, a friend and I saw a decent crowd of people in there and thought they were open. So we opened the door, only to be told something like what your SC was. But in our case, we just said "Oh, sorry!" and left. I ended up coming back a few days later for what I wanted.

i wondered into a shop having an invite only sale once. nothing was mentioned it was invite only, no invites were checked at the door, just about 200 people in an electronics warehouse.

only found out when i went to buy a VCR (yes this was ages ago). i was than asked for my invite. i ended up walking out and making a complaint. possibly sucky i complained? yes. but it was also sucky i wasted 25 minutes browsing.
The mere fact that we have the flamethrower means that someone, somewhere once said "You know, I'd really like to set those customers over there on fire, but don't possess the means to do it"

My BF back in 1983 owned his own company, and had deals with wholesalers that the public could not shop with. Every Christmas he would take a bunch of friends shopping at one particular wholesaler as a 'company perk for holiday bonus' - I got the 3 pack of Fiskars scissors and the set of Fiskars kitchen knives and the 9 pc La Creuset in flame for myself for under $100US. Any other day of the year I would have been politely asked to leave

One of my brothers-in-law owns a gaming store. I was reading the OP in his voice. BIL doesn't really mince words and can be a real jerk to stupid people. The mental image made me snort diet coke out of my nose.

I think that's a little different from Casino Jockey's situation- I agree with him that his situation sucked. Nobody told him that the event was invite-only so he didn't find out until he went to pay that he wasn't supposed to be there. I don't blame him from for being pissed that he wasted his time.
