But I can’t prove it.

My area is a food desert. There hasn’t been a grocery store in town for about 10 years. The next town to the east hasn’t had a grocery store for about 5 years. The next town to the west has a grocery store-a small one with a decent selection, but it’s a 5 to 10 mile drive to get there. Naturally, the locals are excited about a grocery store opening in town.

This guy who moved away after high school has come back to the area. He says he bought the shopping center in the eastern town where the grocery store used to be, but the property records say the old owner is still paying the property tax. And the property owner is a generic business name. It could be anyone.

He also supposedly dumped a lot of money into refurbishing a building in the middle town so it could open as a grocery store. It’s always about to open in 4-6 weeks. It’s been more than 6 months.

The business started out as an LLC, but that started having issues, so they re-formed it as a co-op. Now anyone can buy shares and own a piece of the grocery store.

Initially, the guy didn’t want his name on anything. His childhood friend who still lives in the state and his son were the owners of the business. But now that the friend’s son is going back to school, the guy “reluctantly“ agreed to be added to the account as an authorized signer.

And at first he wanted a debit card, but when I said I would need to pull credit, he changed his mind. We know that he’s been using the young guy’s debit card. When they were in to update the account, I asked the younger guy if he was still using the card even though he’s going back to school. He said he was. I reminded him that he’s responsible for that card and he’s not supposed to share it with anyone else. That didn’t phase him. The guy said that’s how they’ve been paying bills.

We know that the guy has been using the debit card. He’s been making purchases at restaurants and withdrawing from the ATM locally while the student is away in another part of the state. There’s been cell phone payments and Apple Store payments going through the account. Many of these things are obviously not business related.

The Chair of the co-op is also Chair of the chamber of commerce. We were talking about it at the chamber meeting. She said the guy has put SO much money into the grocery store, but he had taken “not a dime” out of it. I wanted to call bullshit, but I can’t say anything due to privacy laws. 😤 She also gave them a check for “HVAC repair” but nothing came out of the account to go to a repair company. As a successful business person, I feel like she should know better.

I worry that all of these people are being taken in. I can’t say much because of privacy laws, and that bothers me. I just hope nobody is putting more than they can afford to lose into this grocery store.

I took my daughter last night to Culver's, a somewhat new restaurant that is starting to pop up around South Florida. A woman was in there with her little tiny Chihuahua sized dog, and it was wearing a little vest that said it was a service animal.

Does anyone out there know what qualifies as a service animal? My feeling was this woman probably bought that little vest off of eBay or Amazon so that she could skirt the rules on what service animals really are.

I say this very often, and what I know about this is they have to be of a certain size and they have to be trained. This animal did not look like it was one that qualified for that.

I don't know what's up these days, but why is it more and more people seem to be smelling or squeezing things In the grocery stores rather than just looking at them and then putting them in their shopping baskets?

The other day, at Whole Foods, I saw a woman checking out the peaches and taking one peach at a time, putting it up right to her nose and face, smelling them, and then putting them back. She must have done this at least five times before she decided she didn't want any of them and just walked off. That means that this woman's dirty, nasty, boogery nose had been all over these five peaches that she went and put back. That was when I decided to turn around and leave.

Yesterday, at Publix, I went over to the soap aisle, and there was this woman picking up these bottles of scented spray, smelling them, putting them back, picking out more bottles, at one point squirting a couple of them into the air to smell, then putting those back so she could buy one she did not spray out of. I found that very nervy. If she liked what she smelled and sprayed out of, she should have put that bottle in her cart.

Finally, again at Publix, when I was in the produce department, I had to wait to get a tomato while this woman was squeezing every single avocado that was next to the tomatoes with her shopping basket right in my way. She must have squeezed at least a dozen avocados before deciding she didn't want any and then skirting off.

These sort of things remind me of the story my dad told to me many years ago about a woman that he saw at the meat department that was taking her dirty, nasty, serrated fingernails and sticking them through the cellophane wrapping of the steaks. My dad was one to call out someone like that, and she just said that she was doing that because she felt like it and it was fun. She then quickly left when Dad was yelling over to the meat manager to report her. And no, she did not buy anything.

People are so gross!

My sister is trying to get onto a website she visits every day. It's a Blogspot site, and she is still signed in, but when she tries to access the site, Blogspot gives an error message and then asks questions like "What do you want to name your blog?" She is NOT trying to create a new blog, she's trying to access an existing site that she doesn't own. She can't get on via her shortcut, nor by typing in the blog name/url. It just keeps giving her the error and setup for creating a blog.

I'm able to visit the site on my own laptop, so it's not the site that's glitching. I don't use Chrome, though, so I don't know how to advise her. Yes, she tried shutting the laptop off and starting it again, just in case. No joy. We tried deleting the shortcut and creating it again. Still nothing. It's just this one site she can't access, and we checked email - she was not blocked or banned. Help please?

Shuffles got transferred last week! I'm not exactly sure what happened, but he did underschedule the store on Memorial Day weekend, as well as play some other games with hours (and some people's vacation checks; I didn't get mine until after I got back which is technically a contract violation).

In exchange we got someone from that store (N) who apparently got into a fight with someone on the front end and that's probably why she was transferred. That bodes well...

Already N has pissed off a few of the cashiers by copping a serious attitude (today I covered a few bathroom breaks, and predictably got grilled as to why I was on a register "I didn't say X could take a break!"...the register's still open so why should that matter, when you gotta go you gotta go and isn't it kinda not kosher to deny bathroom breaks?). My few interactions with N have revealed that she is almost as manipulative as Shuffles; she's continuing his tradition of having very loud, public conversations in Spanish with the cash office manager (who fancies herself a CDH even though she is not supposed to have anything to do with running the front). I'm very tempted to have a translation app running on my phone for a few hours just to find out what they're actually saying...if those conversations do involve us, then we have a right to know what's being said about who.

The good news(?) is that N was an online pickup manager at her old store, so in theory she has an idea of how things work. Whether or not her view meshes with things are actually done here remains to be seen...we're a much smaller store and badly understaffed; I've also developed my own procedures to make things more efficient (and some are actual accommodations). I know that she has no idea that in the mornings I'm expected to do basically everything, whether or not I have orders and/or paperwork.

C (evening cashier) already dislikes N and she hasn't actually met her.
