Me: "People steal them, sir."
WC: "What! Why is it that downtown where there are more criminals the stores have baskets?!?"
Me: " ..."

What I *wanted* to say was "How the hell should I know? Go ask the fucking criminals!" But there were customers behind him.

I suggested he contact corporate. That got the usual "Pfft" making it clear that this was far too much trouble. Thankfully he left shortly thereafter.
Seriously, use a small buggy if you're not buying much. I do. I'm buying a carton of milk and a loaf of bread ... I grab a small buggy.

Later I asked the store manager about this, just to make sure I was giving the correct explanation. I was. A lot of said customers expect me to physically handle the card and do everything for them (swipe, enter PIN, confirm payment).
