Today was the day for our annual benefit meeting, wherein a representative from our parent company and another from our benefits broker inform us of any upcoming changes for the year to come. Lately there's nothing noteworthy changing, but in years past there were major changes as our parent company sought better deals.

Before the presentation our HR lady was visibly frustrated as she tapped on her phone, using some AI model to identify a song she heard that she described only as "elevator music with saxophones."

Irv Irv the Music Nerd: Sounds like Baker Street,

HR lady:....okay, it's not Careless Whisper....

Irv: I bet its Baker Street!

HR lady, after a brief pause. Oh my God Irv, you were right! It is Baker Street!

Not sure if I'm looking for advice or just commiseration.

There's been an announcement about increasing reports of bedbugs in my building. No signs in my unit, thank goodness.
But management has decided the solution is to treat ALL units.

And I have finally gotten some actual details (as opposed to rumours) on the situation.
They are doing roughly 2 floors per week. ALL units will be "treated" even if there's no signs of infestation (mine has no such signs, thank heavens).
For some reason they started on the 13th floor.
I'm on the 14th.
They won't get around to my floor until the end of November.

Okay, well, that's actually fine because the BIG issue is going to be my cats. I'm getting conflicting advice on what to do with them. The woman in the building's office said to lock them in the bathroom and put a towel under the door to prevent any of the spray getting to them.
A quick Google search said no, not good enough. Get them OUT.
My two cats will not let me pick them up, never mind put them into a carrier.
I called the company doing the treating. The rep I spoke to wouldn't/couldn't give me any actual advice. She said I had to catch an actual technician and ask them. Very helpful.
In order to board them at my vet's they must be up-to-date on their vaccines, which they are not (see above about them not letting me pick them up ....)
The cost of vaccines plus boarding is going to hit $400.
So I've thought of a sort of plan:
1) get some gabapentin (tranquilizer).
2) buy two cardboard carriers (the one cat in particular LUVVVS boxes, but the other one is fond of them too).
3) buy some refills for my two Feliway diffusers, so I can get them REALLY stoned.
4) Get each one to the vet ahead of time, so as to spread the financial misery around.
5) Hopefully by the end of November all I'll need is the cost of overnight boarding ($40 per night per cat). AND hope I can get them back into those carriers.

The alternative, of course, is to just make sure I save up the $400 (I've got a month to do so) and drag them to the vet ONCE. That would be easier on everybody.
Wish me luck.

Just got a card from my union to declare my beneficiary for the Accidental Death or Dismemberment policy. (How charming ....)
I don't see myself actually qualifying for this (although it applies off the job too) but I'm debating who to name.
My brother has been extremely generous to me over the years but he sure as hell doesn't need the money.
My sister isn't as well off as he is, but she isn't exactly poverty-stricken either.
I have little doubt that my brother would share it with her (or possibly give her the whole amount).
Thoughts?

Yes, I'm "in" now but let's see what happens when I actually try to post this. I just tried to send Bookstore Escapee my info for the Christmas card exchange and got the message when I hit "Send" so have no idea whether the info got through or not.
This has become a frustratingly chronic problem.
I have an Acer laptop running Windows 10; could that be part of the problem? If not, does anybody know what it is?

This is not going under "Sucky Customers" because it wasn't the customer herself who was sucky.
I'm a grocery store cashier.
Customer came in today with a HUGE order for an Uber. delivery We're talking $300+ in food and stuff.
She needed to pay with her phone, because she said Uber had never given her a card.
Our machines don't accept tap over $250 (stupid, I know, with today's prices).
She tried texting to let them know what the problem was.
Their response?
"Pay for it yourself and we'll reimburse you."
Yeah, no.
She had been talking to a supervisor, trying to solve the problem, and when that came through, she just apologized and left.
I wonder if Uber gives a heads-up to customers that their order is being processed and if so ... they must've had fun trying to backpedal on that.

It’s that time again! If you’re new here, here’s the deal:

Every year, a number of us exchange Christmas Cards with fellow CS members across the globe. We collect sign ups from people each year, compile a list, send it out in early-mid November, and then we flood each other's mailboxes with <strike>glitter</strike> Christmas cheer.

So, the timeline:
You have until Wednesday, November 18th to sign up (that’s a little over 4 weeks from today), I’ll post the list so you'll be able to see how many people are planning to participate, and if you decide you can't handle that many, you’ll have until November 25th to opt out and I’ll send out the list on November 26th. Sound good? Then follow the instructions at the end of this post and sign up!

Now, for a quick FAQ List...

Can I make my own cards, or do they have to be store bought?
Either way. Whatever jingles your bells. Just as long as you remember to sign ‘em.

Religious Themes: Yay or Nay?
Again, it doesn't matter. They don’t even have to be Christmas-themed. This event is about friendship and holiday cheer.

Can I add gifts?
Because someone once asked me about favors…in the past, some people have included various little gifts in their cards – crocheted snowflakes, handmade bookmarks, paper cranes, etc. You are more than welcome to add a little something if you like, but be assured there is absolutely no expectation for anything more than a card from anyone. Anything extra is entirely up to you.

If I sign up, do I have to send a card to EVERYONE?
YES, and in a timely manner too. I cannot stress this enough. It is selfish, rude, and seriously unfair to sign up and get cards from everyone else and not send any of your own. If you wish to only send cards to a select few members of the CS community, please make such plans on your own.

Are e-cards allowed?
No. Once the final list goes out, this becomes a snail mail event. Postcards are allowed, however, if you wish to save a few pennies on postage.

What happens if I sign up and don't send out my cards/don't send out my cards until after the Easter Bunny has visited?
People who sign up and don't follow through make Baby Jesus cry, and thus are automatically placed on Santa's Naughty List for the next year. Oh, and on my naughty list as well. No-shows are banned from participating in future events. A first offense gets you banned for one year. A second offense gets you banned for life.

But what if an emergency comes up and I can't?
I'm not an unreasonable person, and we’ve found that most members of CS that participate are very accommodating. If an emergency comes up, all I ask is that you PLEASE let me know. I will handle things accordingly and you will not be penalized in any way.

How many people will sign up?
It varies. We've had everywhere from 19-60some members sign up in previous years. Unfortunately, my crystal ball hasn't been working lately like it should, so I can't tell for certain how many of you will sign up this year, but the last few years have been fewer than 20. I will stop accepting Sign Ups on November 18th, and I will post a complete list of who has signed up, and you will have until November 25th to opt out, so if the list swells to an amazingly large number of people and it is no longer feasible for you to participate, you can drop out by sending me a PM and letting me know you can no longer participate. Once the opt out period ends, I’ll email the list to everyone. Once the list is sent out, however, you're in it for the long haul. Also, I will not make any changes once the email goes out, so please, please, please make sure your address is complete and correct before hitting the submit button (please?). I have no intention of sending corrections because you didn’t proofread.

How much is postage?
It depends on where you live, how many people have signed up, and how many of the cards you send will be international. In the past, the majority of participants have been in the US, plus a handful in Canada and the UK, and occasionally a few other far-flung places.

Suggestion from our resident Postal Worker:
If you are in the US, please go to USPS.com and get your +4 zip code. This makes the zip code 9 digits long and looks like 12345-6789. This should help stop some of the missing ones we get every year from going missing because the computer has more info. (Thanks for the suggestion, Aethian!) If you go to that link and enter your street address, it will give you the complete, standard format for your address. Use that format when you sign up and things just might go that much more smoothly. Standard US format looks like so:

I work in retail, part-time. At this point I am entitled to three vacation weeks a year.
But here's the problem: the week AFTER a vacation week, I get no paycheque. Yes, we do get vacation pay, but they dole it out in dribbles with each paycheque during the year. It used to come as a single cheque once a year but apparently that was too much effort for a multi-million-dollar company.
So recently I took the week of Oct. 12 off. This means that on Oct. 22 (Thursdays are paydays) there will be nothing until the following Thursday.
I am trying to pay off two large debts, the worst one being a credit card debt. So things are quite tight.
I am seriously considering not taking ANY full weeks of vacation next year.
I usually work three four-hour shifts a week, so my schedule isn't onerous. I will often go in to cover if I'm called in but am not required to do so.
One of my coworkers said she just books long weekends off (I think she works fulltime) instead of taking full weeks off mostly for the same reason. I am thinking of doing the same next year ... if I remember to do so. Since my schedule is pretty short to begin with, it's possible I won't even think about it (I certainly didn't this past year).
Thoughts?

I work as a cashier at a giant corporate grocery store.
Had a customer come through today with (among other things) TWO gigantic turkeys (Canadian Thanksgiving is this Monday).
Me: "Wow, looks like you're gonna have the dinner to end all dinners!"
The customer looked a bit embarrassed.
She said she's going to have a "Friends-giving" dinner for several people, using one turkey.
The other turkey will be cooked up to become part of Thanksgiving dinners that she is going to ... hand out to the local homeless.
Damn, I wish I could've given her a massive discount on her whole order.

My Mac Mini went to Data Heaven a month or so ago.
I have managed to get a replacement and the interesting thing is ... it's not a Mac. It's an Acer laptop, with Windows 10.
I still want to get a new Mac Mini at some point, but meanwhile this is working fine.
And no, I hadn't backed anything up.
AGAIN.
I now have two or three dead hard drives waiting for me to win a large lottery so I can have them sent to a lab (somewhere) and perhaps get at least some of the stuff back.
Only problem with this is I swear, the cursor sometimes has a mind of its own.
