  • More microwave mysteries...

Another microwave tale; while no damage is involved, it's just odd.

Normally when multiple people use a microwave, each individual enters how much time to cook their food and when the timer dings, the cycle starts again.

Someone (in the morning) has been setting the cook time for maximum (99:59) and just letting it go for however long it takes to cook their food; next person shows up, hits START, lather rinse repeat.

This is just puzzling to me, and I'm not sure if it actually saves anyone any time. Although it may explain some of the chaos during lunchtime; the microwave is right next to the food warmers for staff meal, so of course if someone is parked there watching the microwave nobody else can get food in a timely manner.

I'm seriously waiting for someone to put something in there and forget about it.

No you really don't then it will smell all day and could be a fire hazard as it may start one since they set it for 99:99 ouch id hate to be the person to forget and set the building on fire

How does someone NOT forget about it? I understand if it's nuking a sandwich that takes less than a minute, but I microwave frozen dinners that commonly takes 4-6 minutes. I'm not hovering over the microwave that whole time, I'll read a newspaper, play a game on my phone, etc. Granted there aren't swarms of people waiting when I go to lunch, but I often don't hear the ding once complete. I'd overcook my food all the time if I plugged in 99 minutes.

Yeah, one time someone was microwaving chocolate (?) and burned it. It smelled way worse than you would expect burnt chocolate to smell. It stunk up half the store, and lingered for a long time.

When you see the time set to something really high like that, can you just cancel it, if it's not in use of course.

One of our stores got a visit from the fire dept due to someone hitting 10 min instead of 10 sec for a Mars bar...

I hover over the microwave because I've seen people take things out of it and either throw the food away or put it on top, and put their stuff in. Like, the other food hadn't even finished being cooked yet! So I'll hover over the damn thing until mine is ready.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Another possibility is someone doesn't want to hear the microwave beeping when the timer goes off. Since most microwaves don't beep if you simply stop it, that could be the reason for putting in a long time and just stopping it when you need to.

I get not wanting to hear the ding, but that seems stupid given how damn LOUD some people get.

Ditto. Someone threw my lunch out one day when I stuck my head into the hall for ~15 seconds to answer a question J had...turned back and it was gone. I confronted the jerk and was told "what's the big deal? I have to use the microwave; you can have staff meal". Which doesn't get put out for another hour. I've been here since 6AM. You came in an hour ago.

For about a week after that, warehouse and grocery (and a few people I know in other departments) made this person's life a bit difficult

Some of our departments are staffed with self-absorbed idjits; I've had the service hall door slammed in my face when they can see I'm following with my arms full of glass (they look right at me as they're letting it swing shut...).

That's the point I would have smacked his dinner out of his hands all over the floor. But then again, I'm a vindictive little bitch.

I made it a point one night don't touch my food, I work in a call center we have 2 floors I work with about 20 people on this floor well im the only one working late nights in my dept, so I put my food in to cook and come back to my desk to work so I didn't get behind with the door wide open to hear the ding and I can see him from my desk I yelled several times to him ill be there in a minute don't touch my food. Well hes off in lala land and the jaws came out I think I made my point that night.
