  • Meeting the new DORM (sort of)

I got to meet our new Department of Revenue Manager yesterday. Well, sort of. She emailed me rather unexpectedly.

You see, each day we send out a list of arrivals for the next day to "All Staff" at the resort. This list includes VIPs, any anniversary/birthday/other celebrations for which special amenities and upgrades are being sent, etc etc.

For me, it feels weird to simply send out a mostly blank email with an attachment, so I started adding little "On this day in history" tidbits to the body of the email. I've gotten lots of positive feedback from coworkers who enjoy reading them.

Today (Nov 26th) in 1922 was the day Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered, and that was the tidbit I sent with the attachment.

I got a reply from a name I didn't recognize but was listed as our new DORM from corporate management. She said she loved it and was a big Egyptology fan and had read Howard Carter's journals on the excavation.

Me: "Hey, I just got an email from New DORM."
CW: "We have a new DORM? Why is she emailing you?"
Me: "She liked the little daily factoid I sent with the arrivals."
CW: "I didn't realize she even got those emails."
    Me: "Neither did I."
CW: "This means that CEO and CFO get them too, doesn't it?"
    Me: "Probably."
CW: "This is kind of a good thing to know."
Me: "Yeah, it kind of is, isn't it?"
CW: *reading over my email* "At least you know how you can suck up to her now, huh?"
Me: "Yep. I know exactly how I can kiss her butt."

Fortunately, this was a benign lesson that "All Staff" means "All resort staff and corporate management". It's kind of nice to know these things...

(About a week ago the factoid I sent out was about how Toy Story was the first fully computer-animated feature film, and I also noted how I had the entire script memorized as a child. Nice knowing that now all of corporate management knows that about me...)
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

Hey, it never hurts to get noticed by higher ups in a positive way!
That email went from: "Meh, Arrivals from Resort" to "Oh, Arrivals from Resort, lets see what bhskittykatt came up with for today!"
So your name is now connected with something positive and even c-levels at corporate need something that brightens their day once in a while.
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.

However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Well, luck does seem to run on your side with this. Usually, a person does not discover these things unless someone in corporate takes offense.
I might be crazy, but I'm not Insane.

What? You don't play with flamethrowers on the weekends? You are strange.

which has the side benefit of helping ensure people actually read the thing.
