  • The Seventeenth Time is the Charm!

Guy called us, complaining that there's a car parked at his apartment with no permit.

We informed him that there's nothing we can do until Wednesday, as that particular unit has been shut off by the owners until then so new/returning students can move in. At 8am sharp this Wednesday, it will turn back on and we can start towing. But for now, there's nothing we can do.

No, we can't tow him, the lot is off

No, we can't tow him, the lot is off

    The LOT ..... IS...... OFF

No, you can't call the cops on him, they'll just have you call us and we'll just tell you what were telling you now, the LOT IS OFF

Yes, I don't doubt that you pay a lot for your space, but the lot is off for now.

What part of this aren't you getting?

No, we can't tow anyone from there because IT'S OFF

It's off..... "what does that mean?" you say, it means IT'S OFF AND NO TOWING WILL HAPPEN

No, you can't file a complaint with us, there's nothing to complain about with us, IT'S OFF, it's beyond our control. Talk to the landlord, they're the ones that tell us when we can and cannot tow from there.

No, we can't call the cops and get you permission to park somewhere else

    No, we aren't "ignoring" you

No, we are not "not caring about the situation*

We are just a little handcuffed here by the fact that the lot owner has SHUT OFF THAT LOT.

Oh, and this was just the initial phonecall, that ate up 20 minutes before we decided there was just no way to penetrate that lead-shielded peanut he has for a brain with our puny logic waves, so we hung up on him.

We ignored the SEVENTEEN messages he proceeded to leave on the answering machine after that. since we were NOT picking up that number (thank you caller ID)

We gave the towing manager a heads up that he's probably going to get a phonecall tomorrow morning complaining about our refusal to tow from a shut off lot, and to be ready for it.

It's a good thing I have the day off, because the manager left in somewhat of a foul mood this afternoon, and I have no doubt he'll react somewhat poorly to this news.....

Like, you ever see one of those anime episodes, where you piss off a guy enough that he starts glowing like a gambling casino, and screaming with enough force to cause big chunks of the earth around him to detach and float up towards the sky? Yeah, that's pretty much what I think's gonna happen....

I can't imagine being so focused on something to make seventeen phone calls about. Idiot.

I wouldn't have understood 'the lot is off'.

I would have understood 'the owner has asked that we not tow from that lot'.

And I would have directed my ire towards the person who I'm paying for a parking lot - the owner.

Hopefully you chose - at some point - to phrase it the second way.

      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Absolutely, he needs to complain to the only person who _can_ help him right now - the owner! Who would be getting an earful from me if my spot had been stolen!

I'll admit, that phrase "the lot is off" probably wouldn't have made sense to me either, until and unless someone had explained to me that it means "lot owner says no towing any cars until [x] date."

At which point I would have probably cursed some more, apologized for wasting your time, and then called up the lot owner to give him an earful instead.

But then, I have what is called a functioning brain.

Only problem is that when it reaches that point, it still takes a few episodes before the big boom. I think it's Chi constipation that's the problem

Wasn't there, so for all I know, you did tell him, "I'm sorry, the owner told us no more towing from that lot until X date. If you have an issue, I suggest contacting the owner so they can contact us about the tow during this time. Now, if the car is still there AFTER X date, then of course we'll gladly tow!" And knowing the kind of SC you're dealing with, you could hit them with a tact nuke carrying the message and it still wouldn't penetrate.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

              Seventeen messages?

Like, seventeen full "car in spot, car description, vehicle location, apartment address, contact information" messages?

Maybe you should've pointed out to him that no one is being towed from that lot, therefore if he parked in a different space he wouldn't be towed either?

Yeah, suck for whomever holds *that* space, but seems like there's enough suck to go around.

Since the caller was clearly harrassing you, couldn't you have called the cops on HIM?

Never ceases to amaze me that SCs think if they just repeat something over and over, getting ever louder, somehow that something will happen or become true. This guys magic number must have been 17. Say it 17 times and it'll come true! Magic!

It's the same as people who think that speaking LOUDLY and SLOWLY will help a person who doesn't speak your language to understand what you're saying.

Not that I want to be "that" guy, but isn't it 'the principle of the thing?" If someone is being a d-bag and taking my parking spot, I'm not sure that being a d-bag myself and taking someone else's space is a good response.

Same here. I'd ask for clarifications as to what "the lot is off" means but after hearing the explanation, I'd call the owner and have a discussion with him - not continue to harass the towing company, whose hands are tied in the matter.
