  • Dollar General is on my list

for their stupid $9.50 Pampers diapers any size promotion they have going on now.

See, my customers, being the incurable cheapskates they are, are expecting the swamp to give them this price on the big warehouse-club boxes of diapers that sell for $25 a pop, because we match any advertised price. Always have, always will. Except in this case the price match policy doesn't apply because the Dollar General ad isn't for a specific product, but rather a range of products. If it specified only the smaller packs, we would match the price.

But this isn't stopping at least one person a day from taking all the warehouse club boxes off the shelf, taking them to the checkout, throwing a fit when we won't match Dollar General's price, and then leaving the diapers for us to put away as returns.

Having seen the ad on the web, I am honestly thinking the point of this sale was to bait other retailers into selling Pampers diapers for way below their cost.

Geez, what is with the nappy specials lately?!

Over here, they're doing bulk packs of the BabyLove brand for a low price (can't remember what). The supermarket over here at least has put a limit on it (6 per customer). Although I suspect that while it is a 6-per-person limit, it's not going to stop someone from buying 6, then going to another store and uying another 6 and so on...

I figure they probably have a bunch of other items that are NOT on sale/have just gone up in price, as cheap diapers are often used as a way to get people into the store. The "giraffe" toy store has been doing that for decades: They have them at a lower cost than most other places, and they put them aaaaall the way in the back of the store, so customers have to walk past five minutes' worth of toy displays to reach them and get back up front to the registers. They also know that many parents who need them will be foolish enough to bring their kiddles with them when they do so...

Heh. I just had this conversation with Evil Empryss this morning. She got all offended because I got a flyer from Cheap Shipping Company Tools that had coupons for a number of items for free, no purchase required and the flyer she gets didn't.

She started huffing about all the money she spends there, so she should have gotten those coupons in HER flyer.

I told her not to go all Sucky Customer on me (that stopped her in her tracks though I thought she was going to have a stroke for a minute there ). I pointed out the reason I got those coupons and she didn't is BECAUSE I don't shop there as often as she does. They're trying to pull me into the store in the hope that I'll buy something, preferably something expensive.

          It's all about marketing, baby.

If its the same one I'm thinking about, they have flyers right at the entrance with the same coupons. They also in the back pages of Car Craft, motorcycle magazines, etc. If she was offended by being left out, either she can't admit that she doesn't shop there as much or isn't on their email list.

OK, I work for DG. The only size pampers we carry are like $10. Apparently another one of those 'Stick it to the man' groups posted on the net about our ad and specifically TOLD people to just go throw a fit at Awful-mart and other price matching stores because our ad just says 'All counts and sizes' and you too can rip off Awful-mart.

The people that made the ad don't think about the price matching competitors. The only reason they made the ad 'All counts and sizes' is because we DON'T sell the jumbo boxes of Swaddlers.

Trust me, I'm not happy with customers running into my store just wanting an ad so they can go 'Stick it to Awful-mart' and them biting my head off because we ran out of ads.

I'm jaded and cynical enough that it wouldn't surprise me if most of those cheapskates weren't even parents and didn't even have kids at home and fully expected to make out like a bandit at the flea market this weekend reselling their bounties.

This thread is giving me games store flashbacks. So many customers, especially around the holidays, furious at me because we didnt price match Malwort or yellow price tag or Amazon.

There isn't a Dollar General in my city, but there are two in smaller towns within 20 miles of me, and the circulars are getting to people in the city. They are considered local enough for us to price match.
