  • Cashiering Complaints

Somehow the retail gods have allowed me to work overtime this week, and I am exhausted. I'm sleep-deprived for the week's totals, if that makes sense. Anyway, yesterday was especially lovely. Or was it the day before? I don't know; it's all blending together. I just need to vent.

--I can't tell you how many people would walk up to where I was instead of the register with the light on. I kind of understand it's maybe confusing if no one is at that register, but I'm standing on the customer side of this one and the light is off. In fact, I don't care if I'm on the cashier side; if the light's off, don't come over here. >.< So this lady did and I informed her I was going to be at the next one over in 1 minute. (Coworker was there but I was to take over and was just ringing up this one last person where I was). I pointed at the correct register, but the woman said "This one?," indicating another empty, light-less register. Why do they insist on this?

--Being at the service desk does not mean I'm idle. So the lanes are backed up and I'm supervising at the moment. I have just finished with some damages and one of the girls from salesfloor is only up here because she's putting an item on hold. I'm literally just about to go out and ring people up, as it's just gotten busy out there, when this guy passes all the people waiting in line, expecting one of us to ring him up. What's worse is he says, "These girls look like they need something to do." I inform him that I in fact do have many things to do right now. I ring him up because I know if I don't management will get on me if he complains.

--There is a man who is mentally "off" in some way. He always speaks very loudly, startling other customers, & doesn't notice how loud he is. He does just that, interrupting me with a question as I'm helping someone else. He asks me if I've ever thought of getting SCOs. Does it matter? Do they consult me? I tell him that it's a decision corporate would have to make, and he says, "The store manager?" I tell him, no the company. The lady I'm trying to help is not getting my attention, which annoys me. He always has some complaint phrased as a question. One time it was that a drink price was not as listed on the shelf. It was cheaper than listed, and I had to explain that he was paying less, so that was good. I know full-well it's not his fault he's like he is, but it's annoying all the same.

--I've given away so much money because people can't read signs or see that some items are signed and included in the deal and some aren't. Just...READ. Ugh.

ETA: Saturday Edition So apparently the local small university is having move-in weekend. They are in our store buying last-minute stuff. It's like Christmas in here. All the non-students are ticked royally at having to stand in lines that snake down the main aisle toward the pharmacy. At one point I realized I was quickly running out of cash and the mngr was on break. I thought, "forget it" and turned my light off, intending to go elsewhere. People kept coming and I decided not to fight it, but by the third couple I was getting irritated. I asked if they were using cash and explained why I was asking. I don't remember what she said, but I replied that I had turned off my light, but "it's not working." She went on to tell me that they saw the darkened light and figured that I was leaving or something. So if they knew that, why did they come to me anyway? Because they aren't stupid; they just plain don't care. And I had to give them the Retail Smile. I'm so sick of the selfishness.

I don't think there is any full proof way to keep them away from closed checkstands. There is always one who will pretend not to see the obvious signage. They will even ignore the physical obstructions.

I worked at a store that got all brand new lane dividers. These were stocked with candy, gum, etc. They were cool because the entire side would unhook and swing out, like a big gate. This blocked the entrance to the checkstand. On the backside of this gate was a large sign that would flip up over the gate. It read, "LANE CLOSED". It was great. Customers couldn't reach that checkstand, they would just see the front of the gate (covered with candy and gum) topped off with a large 'closed' sign.

Well, crap, it only took customers a few weeks to see how these gates could swing out. And guess what?! They would just start pushing the gate back, sign and all. Then they'd just walk up to the checkstand and plop their groceries down!! What the hell!!! Then we'd say, "Sorry, this is closed," and they would act like they didn't know. "Whoops. Sorry. I didn't know. But you can still take me, right?"

WTH! They just physically pushed open a five-foot tall metal gate, fully stocked with candy and gum on one side, so it fairly heavy! And they ignore the 1-foot tall sign sticking out on top of it! And they still have the gall to pretend they did not know the checkstand is closed.

I swear to god, you could put Cerberus, a hydra, a couple of gargoyles and a Nazgul to block the lane, and some idiot would fight his way past and expect someone to take care of him at that register. All because they're Too Important or In A Hurry Dammit! and can't wait in line.

That was our morning yesterday at the checkouts. I had went up to do my On-hand counts on the cigarette packs and, next thing I know there's two people standing at the register on the other side of the kiosk from me, asking if it was open.

Duh? The only register open was on other side of the kiosk (behind me) with a light ON and a cashier at the register yet they couldn't go over there, where the line already was???

Even the cashier running the register told them twice that she was open and taking customers at her register.

Finally after a few minutes, the pair got the hint that there was nobody else going to open a register (office person not there and I have no cashier numbers) so they finally meandered over.

One of those mornings where we didn't have a cattle prod available.. . .

Arrrrggggg I can't stand it when I'm trying to close the lane and people keep coming. MoonCat is right! I have gotten the occasional smart customer though, who will say something to me along the lines of "if you didn't turn them away, you'd never get your break, huh?" Yep. Exactly. And I'd never get lunch, never get to go home, etc....

We have 2 windows. Just 2, each is shown to be open or closed by you being able to look through the glass; so why do they keep queuing behind each other at one window while ignoring the other, even though they can see the staff waiting?

            "Are you open?" ...

We have three registers that are all in a row and a queue where people feel like "cattle" in a "maze" (If I hear that one more time....). People usually run on the farthest register though we can ran on any. I can be standing with my back to the customers doing something on the shelves behind me, standing between two of the registers and people will still dump their stuff on the counter. Sometimes I'll be nice and ring them up if the regular cashier is busy but most of the time, sorry no. If you can't tell if a register is open or not I can help you by pointing you in the right direction.
I would have a nice day, but I have other things to do.

Where I work, there is only one person per shift. There are two registers. We have a sign that we switch back and forth between registers that says THIS REGISTER CLOSED. I can be standing at my register, ringing someone up, and some idiot will stand RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE SIGN and wait. I let them wait.

How about this one. Back when I worked at the gas station/convenience store I was painting the one public washroom over the weekend. I started off by having the mop and bucket blocking off but that wasn't good enough. I went and got some caution tape and created a spider web across the open doorway. People would still try and stick their head in and ask if they could use the washroom, while I'm up on a ladder painting the walls. Oy!

I HATE the line "You look bored, let me give you something to do!" They never see the huge line I just took down or what I do behind the scenes. Makes me want to scream. I've never said that to ANY employee EVER. Never bored. EVER. Even standing there is a job sometimes so STFU.

This! No, I'm really not bored, I'm just taking a moment to relax after that huge line I just finished, and I was about to actually clean this register down since no one is here. Trust me, there's always something for me to do.

It's just plain rude because it insinuates we don't work hard, reinforcing the stereotype about front-end people.

I used to work at the Big Red Bullseye back in high school. Christmas season is upon us, all lanes going non-stop. My shift ended more than 30 minutes prior, with no end in sight of the multitudes of customers on my lane. Finally, I'm told: "Turn your light off, the person you're ringing is your last one, ask them to put up the "Lane Closed" sign on the belt behind their items." The people behind her were mostly understanding, especially when it was explained that I'd been there since open, worked thru my break (technically illegal, but absolutely my fault as I forgot), and my shift ended more than 30 minutes ago. However, one woman got cranky. Apparently, she ignored the "Closed" sign and was trying to ask if I was closed. I didn't hear her because I was talking to the customer I was helping (iirc, I was actually enjoying the conversation, as she was fairly sarcastic, so we were kindred spirits).

I was actually at Guest Services when she walked over to complain. I actually piped up, "Ma'am, I think that was me. I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to ignore you. I just didn't hear you." She got all huffy, claiming I made eye contact, blah blah blah. She walked off in a huff, my Front End Manager said she appreciated that I spoke up and apologized. She also said not to worry about it. That people just get cranky during the "happiest time of the year".

I remember when I first started cashiering and my CSM told me to go ahead and close my line down - I was terrified of pissing off customers! Now I'm just like "Sorry!" (but not really, because I gotta go now)

My favorite comeback to the 'You look bored' line is to tell them 'Nope, I haven't been bored since 1978, there's ALWAYS work to be done'.
