  • I'm not real...?

My husband is making a name for himself in the area of music broadcasting and radio among other things. That being the case he gets quite a lot of spam from musicians and PR companies because they want him to listen to the music and give a good word and give them publicity. When he can, he'll often try to tell them nicely that it's really not a good PR move to do so. Sometimes they get pissy, but sometimes they have a rational discussion and even learn something about what it means to get the attention of someone like my husband (who I shall refer to as H). This guy, though...

There are two twitter accounts involved here. One I shall call M for musician (this is using the term liberally) and the other one PR for the PR company.

PR sends one near identical tweet after another telling people to go buy M's album. The only difference in the tweets is which person who seems like they talk about music and has a few people following them. Of course, they're getting some angry replies, but PR and M don't go off on them much. A little, but not full crazy. That was saved for when my husband tried to nicely explain why spam is bad.

The short version of this part of the story is that the guy completely blew up and started tweeting from his own account, cursing, throwing out slurs for mentally disabled people, and generally being a jerk. He takes screenshots of H's responses without his vitriol in between and shares that on Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook to make it appear that H was just sending him tweets over and over without provocation and tries to tell people to report H.

    We laugh and move on.

Later, he starts spewing this stuff again, find's my husband's company's email, writes and demands that H get fired or he'll sue the company, AND starts tweeting at me threatening to get H fired and basically tattling on him. (Also, H IS the company practically. Founder, owner, CEO, etc. The idea of trying to get him fired is laughable.)

I report, block, pour a drink. I refuse to engage this guy.

Of course, he doesn't realize I've blocked him, so I was alerted that today he's still tagging me in stuff along with a friend in a band who tried to talk some sense into him. Apparently, both the band and I are fake and all just H masquerading under different personas. He's also trying to spread this around on Twitter and Facebook.

In all of this, the PR twitter account got involved in tagging me in about half a dozen posts in a row spewing made up crap. Apparently, it's been "confirmed" that I'm not real. (Another account to report and block.) Also, M is denying also being PR even though M's bio says he's the founder of PR.

The crazy is strong with this one, guys.

P.S. I didn't start the thread to create another channel for receiving legal advice. Getting quite a load of it right now. Just venting and sharing my misery. You're welcome.

    P.P.S. Moar vodka!

The only thing you can do is block 'em and just get giggles as they try to convince themselves that you aren't real. Frankly, if you're asked why you aren't responding to them, just tell that person that you have better things to do, like hitting your head against a brick wall repeatedly. It'd have the same affect after all.

Update! H has heard from one of M and PR's previous targets. Apparently, this poor guy has been harassed on and off for the past year and has been accused of having an army of thousands of fake accounts. This guy is surprised M/PR didn't accuse H of being one of his sockpuppets, but apparently H has enough prestige to qualify to be a puppetmaster in crazytown.

I'm hoping this guy doesn't have many followers, and is basically just screaming at a wall.

Me: Sounds like a job for Gravekeeper!

              Me: Nevermind.

He's got more than 500 followers in the M account and less than 200 in the PR account. Not like a Twitter celeb or something.

                  It's okay. I'm not real either. I'm a pigment of someone's imagination.

                      Re: Twitter.

I don't normally use twitter. I opened an account back in 2010 so I could post progres reports on the lunar eclipse we were having; thereafter I ignored it.

Recently I just got an e-mail claiming that my Twitter account has been suspended for suspicious behaviour. Having not used it in 4 years, I suspected that this was a phishing scam of some sort, so I ran it through spamcop.net, and it traced back to the actual Twitter company, so it's not a phish.

So I logged on, for the first time in years, and found that somehow I was "following" 1897 accounts. Many of these in Russian, Turkish and Arabic, three languages that I have never spoken in my life.

Apparently you can't "mass unfollow" anymore; this is considered "spammy" behaviour somehow.

I just cancelled the account instead. Don't need it anyway.

Then I got an e-mail that it's been reopened.

Something fishy seems to be going on here...

ETA: I just "deactivated" it again. It seems that it takes 30 days to delete the account completely, and if you log in once more within 30 days, it reopens the account. I may have to email someone about this. I did change the password, of course.

Well, my wife does call all of you my "invisible friends" but at least she doesn't think I'm making you up...

They still haven't gotten any word back on my report. My husband got a response to his that he submitted before M and PR went off on me and they said M and PR weren't breaking any rules. (Um, ok, nevermind PR's constant spamming, then?) I submitted my reports after I was tagged repeatedly, called fake, etc. I'm hoping my reports have more weight since he's trying to drag me into something and make false claims when I hadn't been involved at all up to that point.

Funny thing is I did check M's account again for the first time in several days and he was tweeting at a service that apparently shut down his account. As for the PR account, I can't tell if he's doing anything like that there. If he is, it's buried in the massive pile of spam tweets identical to what was sent to my husband.

Update: Twitter FINALLY got back to me about M's account and said he's not breaking any rules. They still haven't gotten back to me about the PR account. At this rate, I'm wondering if someone has to threaten violence for them to consider it harassment. I'm not hopeful for the outcome here.
