Sitting at the motor vehicle department today to finally get my license changed after our move. The place is packed and a lot of people here and there are discussing things in Spanish (there's also plenty of English and some Somali, to, but *shrug*). Some old codger sitting next to me turns to me and starts bitching about all the Mexicans in the place. I tried to ignore him but he just kept talking and trying to get me to agree with him so I finally looked at him and said the first thing that came to mind.
"¿Crees que soy Americana?" (Do you believe I'm American?")
The look on his face was priceless! He got up and stood on the other side of the room while some of the Spanish-speakers near me laughed.
Most times I have a hell of a time remembering enough Spanish to speak it (I understand what I'm hearing better), but just this one it paid off. That said, with brown hair, blue eyes, and an olive complexion I don't think I look particularly White or Hispanic, but recently I've been addressed in Spanish, Turkish, and Arabic, so maybe it's how I'm wearing my hair or something.
Cookies for the ones who know where my title comes from.
