  • But at least he saved money!

Yesterday in the New Job, we had a party of 40 that my coworker--The Mustache--and I split. Each couple was doing their own separate check, but since we knew that going in, it was pretty smooth. As per our manager, we added a 20% gratuity on to each check. (The group had been advised of this prior to arriving.)

So apparently one of the group that The Mustache was waiting on had to wait a little longer for his meal than other people. And I guess he wasn't happy. Because he INSISTED that The Mustache remove the gratuity, which on his check was $5.22. The Mustache told my manager this, but when she, the manager, said "Oh, no!" thinking something was drastically wrong, The Sage and Wise Mustache said "Don't worry about it...just watch." So she removed the gratuity, and the customer paid The Mustache.

For the tip, he wrote in $5.00.

Yes, boys and girls, this wiley and wary customer stood up for himself, refusing to allow the 20% gratuity to go unchecked....and saved himself a whopping 22 cents.

The Mustache was not too stressed out about his lost revenue!

      Wait wait wait. Two questions.

1: So you charge gratuity even if they pay sepearte? I thought it was only if they all go together. ( I rarely go out with more then three or so people, so I never had to pay gratuity)

2: Only 198 words?? You sick Jester? I was expecting at least 500.

Separate checks do not conclusively prove separate groups. If there was one call ahead to inform the restaurant that A group of 40+ was coming, and the group had the expectation of being served at approximately the same time, regardless of how the checks are tallied out, it is 1 group and gratuity gets added.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

Parties of six or more are charged gratuity (normally 18%, but this was a large party, and was prearranged). Yes, many people try to get out of the gratuity by being "separate." Sorry, no dice. We will give you separate checks, but they each will still be getting a gratuity. I notice that these parties, while claiming to be "separate" when paying, sit together, talk to gether, and if someone's food doesn't come out with the rest, get annoyed together.

It is very amusing for them to try this at my other job, where we flat out don't DO separate checks, per house policy.

It's morning. It was a short story. And I have posted shorter.
