  • What are these hooks you speak of?

A 'lady' beckoned me over for some help, so off I went to offer her some assistance. She'd got a pair of curtains but the fittings were hooks and rings, and she wanted eyelets.

Her: Yeah, so I really like these curtains but I wanted eyelets. How do you use these rings? Will they fit my pole?

Me: Yes, the rings will fit. All you need are some hooks.

    Her: Hooks? Erm...

So I explained to her how to use the hooks, and that all she needs to buy are the hooks and the rings, and she's all set. She just looked at me like I was stupid and then said:

Her: OMG, you don't have a bloody clue do you?

I was gobsmacked. Yes. Yes I do have a bloody clue actually. You're the one who doesn't seem to understand that hooks are actually a thing. She even thought the rings came attached to the curtains.

And then she asked if there was someone else who actually knew what they were talking about. So I got my colleague. Who told her the exact same thing I did. I relished in this as I kept saying things like "Yes, so as I explained to you before" etc etc etc, because I'm sorry but to be treated like I'm stupid is just not on and I'm not having it.

She just went red in the face, said "I'll just stick to eyelets, it's easier" and skulked away.

Learning new things like hooks and rings is hard!!!

Did she mean grommets (large eyelets) which don't need any hooks?

But it doesn't really matter, because I can't TELL you how pissed I get when someone acts like I don't know what I'm talking about. And many times it's something on the customer's end, like they are using the wrong word to describe what they want. Don't get mad at me if you can't explain properly!

Obviously too hard for her. Heaven forbid her to *gasp* learn something new, much less anything that doesn't have a smartphone app for.

There are actually drapery panels that have the rings sewn into the top of the curtains - no fuss, no muss. Just slide them over the drapery pole, insert both ends of the pole onto the brackets at either end of your window and you're all set.

And no, there is no smartphone app for that.

I usually sew my own curtains: hem the raw edges, fold over a channel at the top, measure the length, sew a hem. Slide rod through channel. Add those decorative/end-protecting 'acorn' thingies, stick rods on hooks beside the window. Enjoy.

Yes, I know there's lots of other options, and that most of those options make prettier curtains. But basic curtains that just insulate the window and provide privacy are dead easy.

I know how to make the various curtain styles, but I usually stick to rod pockets instead of fiddling around with fancy folds and hooks when I make them for my own use. They make tapes now that take the fiddling out of making curtains, but I just look at them as an added expense that I don't care to spend money on. Besides, as long as I'm in a rental I refuse to spend mega bucks on custom curtains.

But seriously, even as a kid I understood how hooks worked with certain curtain types. They were the bane of my rental existence growing up.

This. Customers who can't explain or articulate exactly what it is they want. And act like YOU are the idjit for not being a mind reader and knowing when they said A they really meant B.

Me, I'll stick to simple rod pocket curtains. If I want them prettier or fancier, I'll just buy prettier/fancier fabric.
