  • 3rd party sale

I was filling in on the register today. A guy comes in asks for a pack of cigs. I card him and he has no I.D. on him. He leaves. Another guy immediately comes in and asks for the exact same kind of cigarettes. Of course I refuse the sale and explain about the law against knowingly allowing a 3rd party sale.

    He says they're for me.

Doesn't matter. I say. He came in, asked for them and couldn't produce any ID. Again I explain the prohibition against 3rd party sales.

He proceeds to tell me how old he and the other guy are as if it matters. The first guy was under carding age according to state law.
I explain the fact that I would be fined, lose my job et cetera and he says call them. Says it more once.
Yeah right. As if they would say anything different than what I told him.

I'm like Nostradamus. I can see the future. I know exactly how I'm going to leave the job. One of those types is going to get pissy with me while I'm having bad day and I'm going to drop a huge F bomb laden tirade on them.

"So . . . you admit you were buying for the other guy?!"

I don't get it, really. If you're going to do this why not wait until a few customers have come and gone before sending the guy in? It doesn't take a genius to see that it will be suspicious if you do it right away.

BUT, as was the case at the gas station I used to work at, I had windows EVERYWHERE all around me. Now this makes things a LOT eaiser cause I can see one guy talking to another with hand gestures. when second guy comes in NO NO NO and yes I could get away with it because of the straw purchase laws I was required to follow.

Had enough people try the same thing buying beer.
I'm lost without a paddle and headed up SH*T creek.

In ths day an age, I have no idea how people can STILL be ignorant that you're going to get carded if you want cigarettes, it's been that way for YEARS, though there's probably enough places that don't follow the rule that the message truly doesn't reach some.

Most of the gas stations around here won't card me anymore (I'm 33 FYI), but Dollar Admiral and Wal-mart still do it consistently.

They aren't even that smart around here. I can literally watch two people stand by my beer case, one tell the other what kind of beer he wants, and then they come up and attempt to buy it. Um... No. GTFO. People are just plain ignorant!

We've actually seen that level of "genuis" at my Litter Box on rare occasion.

Ask how many got away with it?

And, from another perspective, if you're in a group buying beer, everyone needs their ID.

Yes, that means you young packs of young guns out showing the world how "tough" you are w/your obscene langugage, looking like you're not old enough to shave.

Does it really take four guys to buy a 6 pack of beer? At least have 3 wait outside out of sight and have the one with ID at the register.

And don't think sneaking back in shortly after you've stormed out b/c I've taken your beer away and placed it behind the counter is going to work either. I've busted many a punk trying that and they all get the same thing . . . sent out the door without.

Tell me you're going to Peter's around the corner or Wallyworld? Great, I'll have our CSM on duty call ahead and let them know to expect you.

And anytime there's a major holiday that involves increased beer/wine sales, you can expect more of this tomfoolery.

And expect to see ALE agents parked in the parking lot in an unmarked car at any time, too.

I still cannot see how people can leave their house without some form of ID on them when they KNOW they're going out and about. Going to the mailbox, a walk around the neighborhood, and such? Don't need it.

Anywhere else? It should already be in your purse/wallet/bra/shoe/wherever.
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

why bother taking the ID out of the wallet? there- problem solved, if you can afford the booze, you can show ID.

We were required to have the customer take their ID out of the wallet. On the subject of not having your ID with you - when they were filming the first Hunger Games movie we had Donald Sutherland in the store buying Champaign and he didn't have his ID. Now we were supposed to ID everyone not matter how old they looked and if no ID, no alcohol. But the one manager just let it go. I don't know how she did it.

In my store we card everyone, unless we know for sure how old they are -- so my co-workers don't have to card me, I don't have to card my mother, sister, or nieces and nephews. So I image everyone knows how old Donald Sutherland is, so I wouldn't bother to card him either.
