  • Is 2 jobs really being greedy?

So like I've mentioned, I got a second job. I got it because my paycheck from my full time job isn't enough, and I need money for food (my food bill has gone up somehow) and my gym membership. Though, I'm considering canceling that because it is expensive. Oh yeah and car repair bills. Those are never cheap.
Anyway, everytime I tell my friends and family about that (the 2nd job, not the gym) I'm met with a reproachful and disapproving look. Someone even told me that I'm just being greedy and money hungry. Well money may not be everything, but it does make the world go round and I need it. And I do have a life outside of work. I socialize. I'm not going out everyday but maybe once a week cuz it's expensive. I work on my hobbies. So it's not like I'm a workoholic or something. I just like to have money to save up. But no one seems to believe this. At all. it's really bring me down.
Soooo...I'm just wondering. If someone told you that they got a 2nd job, would you think s/he was greedy and money hungry? And if you have 2 jobs, do people tell YOU this? Just wondering.

You're not greedy at all. A lot of people need two jobs just to make ends meet. If you could put food on the table with only one job you would.

What does it have to do with them? It's your life, after all. You're working for the money at both jobs. What with the cost of living being what it is these days, sometimes two jobs is necessary in order to make ends meet.

No, I tend to think if someone has two jobs, it's because they need 2 jobs to get by.

The only person I can think of that has two jobs and doesn't need it is my grandfather. His Monday through Friday job is at an air force base, and on some weekends he'll work for the local police department. He does it partially as a hobby, partially because they're short-staffed, and partially because it's what he's always done. He's 61 and has been working for some form of police since he was 20. He actually refused to be paid as much as the other officers, since he's doing it mostly out of his own love for the job. The extra money goes into savings accounts he set up for my sisters and I, and even a college fund he set up for Little Ara right after she was born. So I don't think I can be mad at him for taking a second job. I can see how others would be, but they wouldn't understand the whole situation. I don't think I'd ever fault anyone for taking a second job.

I work two jobs because I need it to survive, especially with the husband leaving me right now.

I'm also going to school so someday I can get by with just one job.

I've never had anyone call me greedy. I've had them call my workload insane (it is). But I think people realize I wouldn't do it if I didn't have to.

Nor would I think someone with two jobs is being greedy. You gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet!

Different strokes for different folks. Only thing is, if you're working significantly more than 40 hours a week total, I hope you *like* what you're doing.

I would never think anybody with more than one job is being greedy. I would usually assume that their main job isn't enough to help make ends meet. When I had two jobs in the past people would tell me to try to find a single job that paid me enough or gave me enough hours so I wouldn't have to work so much, but that's about it.

So what F'in what even if she was. She wants to put in the effort to get it. You don't make money sitting at home.
Reminds me of when I wanted out the barracks in the navy and needed to save up some $$ for deposit and such. One of the guys made fun of me every weekend when he would go out to party and say in. I enjoyed the sad eyes as I was packing up to left him in that roach infested hell hole the next month.

Many in here have put it well. When I hear "I have two jobs," my reaction is always "It sucks that that has become necessary. I hope you're able to advance in one job (or both) and get decent money out of it soon."

The reaction from your family -- not that it's any of their business -- is completely uncalled for, and sounds like the words of people who either have comfy salaried jobs or have never had to work in their lives. Believe me, I know -- I have relatives who fall into the latter category who don't seem to understand that you can't just walk into a shop or office and get a high-paying, full-time job in nothing flat with no hassle.

Going to go out on a limb here and suggest the people calling you money-hungry are not currently in the position of having to be money-hungry.

A lot of people have to work 2 jobs to live independently and keep food on the table. Sucks, but that's what things have come to for many people.

My only response to these people would be a blank look, and saying with a completely deadpan expressions "That's an interesting assumption", and then stare at them until they become uncomfortable.

really? Greedy? Hmm. Then I must have been greedy for close to 10 years since I too had two jobs. I started it to earn some extra $$ and I was bored, but never greedy. I worked my backside off too, esp when it became necessary for me to have two incomes. Thankfully, I don't need the second anymore, but if I did, I'd still be working.

And if i didn't, and still chose to work? the extra $$ would go in the bank. I don't see how its greedy when you work for te money; its just not being handed to you on a silver platter.

In my case, I started the 2nd job because we had bills to pay. Shortly afterward, my wife left her job to become a care-giver to her aunt, who recently passed, and then to her grandmother. So the 2nd became a necessity. Although I'm back to one at the moment, there are things coming up which will demand a 2nd job to be able to pay for them. Unless of course, Publishers Clearing House shows up at my door......
