  • Thank You, <your name>?

Would you be comfortable with someone saying "Thank you, <your name>"?

If I see someone's nametag, and I've been frequenting the place, I've started doing this recently.

For instance, there's a place my family and I sometimes go for breakfast on weekends. One of the waitresses there frequently seats and waits on us. I call her by name, and I'll say to her, "Thank you, <her name>".

So would that creep you out a little, or would it be much more appreciated than just a "Thank You"?

If you're a regular and generally friendly to the waitress, I can't see it being a problem. I have several people who use my name when I serve them, some of them I know their names as well so we both do it.

Mind you, I get a lot of people calling me 'darling' 'sweetheart' things like that, which I know upsets some people but in my mind is similar to this situation - that they are regular enough to see that closer relationship.

I don't mind if it's a regular, but if it's our first interaction it weird me out. Trying to shorten my name will earn my Pasted Smile - only my ex & her mother have ever had a pass on a contraction, and that was mostly because I gave up the fight. (I'm named for my grandfather, but he always used a contraction; at age 3, I responded to his calling me that "my name is {full name}!" The issue was never raised again...)

Slightly off topic, but my dad has a nasty habit of calling me by my first and middle names. He's done this my entire life. I think he can't help it. I gave up that fight a long time ago.

However, sometimes when I'd get in trouble, my mother would add on to my first and middle names. Because technically my given name is a shortened version, spelled slightly differently, of a longer name.

Sounds fine. Just don't keep repeating it over and over in the same conversation. I had a dealer do that to me and I was like It felt like he'd read a book on how to influence people...

Maybe I'm living up to my screen name, but if I don't know you, don't use my name. Period.

I'd say it's generally a little bit weird- it almost seems like you're trying to imply being closer to the staff member than you actually are.

I agree. Generally, non-regulars who use my first name are trying to pull something.

I have a few alter egos, but ASM has decreed that we are to 'make a good impression' on the new SM so are to wear nametags (if she's never seen my 'real' nametag how does she know which one is correct?). I wanna go back to my fake one(s).

For me, it depends on how it's being used. If I'm greeting a guest and they respond with something a long the lines of 'Great, thank you Teysa. How are you today?' That's fine. They're just being polite. It's when they start doing the whole 'Can I get some water, Teysa? Can I order a beer, Teysa? How long does this ride last, Teysa? Do I order food from you, Teysa?' that it gets annoying.

It never bothered me. I figure that's why they put my name on my name tag.

I'm fine with using my name, because it's on my badge and I probably gave you a card with my name on it, as long as you weren't a douche, lol

Use my name once, fine. It was on my tag, so fair game. Use it repeatedly, it becomes creepy. If I wasn't at work, didn't know you from Jack, and you used my name... STALKER.

I have my given nickname, which my family uses and so do strangers who refuse to say my full first name. Then I have my real nickname.. and only friends get to call me that. That is how you know your place in my level of "friendship."
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

Half the time the customers can't hear me and call me by a name that sounds similar, or they keep saying, "What was your name?" and saying back the WRONG name when I tell them again...This can go on for a minute or so.

What I really hate is someone who uses the full version of my name, which I have never used on the phones at work. I go by a shortened version, and if I wanted someone to call me by the full name I'd have given that out. There's one regular customer who does this to me all the time. I haven't said anything because it just seems fussy and petulant (plus I had to complain about him to a manager for something else, and he'd probably think I'm out to get him).
