  • I need to vent

As I said in my last thread, I've been fired under dubious circumstances. It has done a number on my depression, especially since I have yet to get any solid job offers. I went on one interview, which I thought went pretty good. However, when I called to follow up they told me that they were holding off on hiring until they freed up hours. Why post the job if they didn't have the hours? It hurts so much to know that I'm not wanted. I feel so useless. Just needed to vent.

Vent away. That's what we're here for ^_^

As for the job posting -- Especially in large corporations and in government jobs, many places are required to post all openings publicly and go through the motions, even if they have no intention of filling them right away, or of filling them from external interviews. It's possible you may have been caught in this -- It's their fault for pulling this sort of crap; not yours!

I absolutely DESPISE this - they waste the time and money and raise the hopes of the applicants who are NEVER going to get hired. This practice must cease!

IANAL -- But this may literally be a legal requirement in some cases, especially with government jobs/EEOC requirements "so everyone has a chance to apply," etc. Can anyone with more experience in this arena clarify, please? ^_^;>

I think it's crummy, too, FWIW. I've gotten rejected on this basis more than once, myself.

          Some possibilities:

          1. It's a seasonal job, and the employer must wait for the hours for said job to become available.

          2. The employer plans to hire several people for different positions and do orientation for them all at once.

          3. (Not likely, but possible) The person currently doing the job is about to get canned; the hours will be freed up when that finally happens.

Employers have to do this because people will sue for literally anything. "I didn't get to apply/wasn't interviewed because I'm old/gay/minority/whatever."

At least if the employer does an interview they can say the applicant wasn't the best fit for the job, or didn't meet the needs of the job.

Mmmm... I applied for two different positions downtown, no interview for either. Now I can sue and retire!

              I feel your pain.

I had an interview 3 weeks ago. I was assured the interviewer liked me, good fit, blah blah blah. Then the delays started piling up, company's HR wasn't in on the hire. More waiting. Then I hear they were just about to write up an acceptance letter for me... only to discover the position they interviewed me for was never authorized. It's in bureaucratic limbo for the last 2 weeks. Could be another week, month, never. And I've no other leads.

Never view rejection as a bad thing. It is a learning opportunity.

One of the best questions to ask during any interview is at the end. Ask the interviewer (What stands out about this interview and how do you think I could have done better?) This gives your potential employer a parting thought about you that you want to improve which shows a desire to achieve, and it will give you insight for your next interview.

As for Venting we in Cyber Space are always available. I hope your next interview is more rewarding.

I didn't view it as a rejection. That's the thing: by all indications I should have been hired. I got along great with the assistant manager who interviewed me, he suggested more areas of the store that I could work in beyond what I applied for and I was greatly receptive to that, and I left feeling on top of the world. And now they tell me they don't have the hours? It felt like a slap in the face. I haven't been out on an interview since because it just hurt me so much, thinking that even if I have an excellent interview there's something about me that makes them not want to hire me.

When I was in High School I got a part time job at a roller rink. I applied for the job of DJ but was put in as a skate handler. I really didn't care it was job. I worked 3 shifts then was told there was a mistake and to not come back. I was pissed and pushed for reasons. I found out the place was co-owned and they owners did not really communicate. So when one hired me the other had already hired someone else for the job. I got shafted but went on to a different place of employment that held its own entertainment in stupidity of management and coerkers.

The point I'm making is you may have done well with the interviewer you may have an outstanding Resume but some places just don't have their shit together when it comes to hiring. Don't hide away and take it personal. Get back out there apply to other places, maybe try a different type of work environment see what other jobs are interesting. I worked in Food for ages I love to cook but I got burned out so I taught my self Computers and now I work on them for a living. (Side note I hate computers now lol)

Just some friendly advice. I know you just wanted to Vent but I always look for ways I can help build others up. If I am a stepping stone for someone else success then I have done my job in this world.

Nope, there is nothing about you that makes them not want to hire you. There's something about them. Mostly that they've really f***ed something up in their own business.

I was in a similar place recently (so, so bad. The unemployment and stress of job applications literally made me suicidal), and the thing that turned it around for me was a great cover letter. No kidding: I went from zero responses to my application to actually having to decide between interviews. I got help on mine from the career department at a local community college; do you have access to something like that? If not, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the letter I used, if that will help.
