This happened around 7:30pm on Sat. I've been looking in the newspaper online to find an art. about it but there is nothing. The stuff the paper mentions are things like "local bite by crocodile in Cancun," ugh.
Also, most importantly, the cashiers are not suppose to answer the phones, ie, not be on the phones (except to call for something over the intercom).
Anyway, 7:30 Sat, people are running into the store, saying there is a car on fire and children are trapped in it, do we have a fire extinguisher? Of course, the people running into the store run right out, so when I have the fire extinguisher in hand I don't have anyone to give it to and I was wondering if I should run out. Then I decide to get on the intercom to call the manager. While I'm on the phone a woman comes in, really angry at me for not going out to give the fire extinguisher to whoever, and she takes it from me. While waiting for the manager, I call 911. I totally didn';t think everyone and their 2 year old would be calling 911 from their cell phone outside.
First I thought the fire was in our parking lot, so I climbed the desk to try to see it, but I couldn't. But I find out the fire is on the street; word from customers was that it flipped over and caught on fire. If there were dead kids, it would be reported, so I guess either they got out ok or there were no kids in the car at the time, people just were seeing things that weren't there.
Manager said I did the right thing, giving the fire extinguiser and calling 911. But asst. manager saw me on the phone and berates me, tells me the cashiers should never answer the phone. Normally, when a manager or someone tells me something, like I'm always suppose to put items in a bag unless asked not to, or I'm suppose to purge books on my off time, I don't say, "no one told me that," because no manager wants to hear that. But I did tell the asst. manager that I was on the phone with 911. Next day the asst. manager tells me I did the right thing.
Still, we didn't get the extinguisher back, but I'm not in hock for it.
