  • Don't EVER work video!!!

If you value your sanity, I beg you not to work for a video store...ever!!! It may sound fun, but future employers look down at it and customers treat you worse than fast food workers. You are open 365 per year and working as a Store Manager of one of these places is a kin to running Hell, only less fun. I also had the pleasure of being an Area Trainer and as such, trained all of the new managers.

On this particular Friday night, I had a new female MIT that I had given the floor to for the first time. I wanted to see what she could do and how ready she was. I kept busy with projects off to the far side of the counter.

Next at the register was the man of my dreams....Kidding! His name was Tavish and he was about 6'6" and had his little 5'2" girlfriend with him. At first I only heard bits and pieces of his interaction with my new MIT. She's no small fry herself. Big country girl from Montana, about 185, 6' tall...even though soft-spoken, I figured she'd be fine. Not even close! Next come the obscenities. B*&^H this and F$#@K that. He was really quite the gentleman. He had the entire store's attention, as well as mine. My MIT came to me to ask for guidance. It appeared that he had a whopping $15.00 in late fees that he admitted were his, but because he TOLD us they would be late, he felt he should not have to pay any late fees! WHAT !?! I'll try that next time I rent a car. Well I told you I was keeping it for a week......... So, I told her just to work on getting him out of the store. Offer to split the fees in half as a courtesy. (This is a very common practice...try it next time you have late fees) She returned to him, and he returned to screaming and swearing. Enough was enough.....time for me.

I approached him and said, "Sir, I am the Store Manager here and it appears that there is a dispute on your account. How can I assist you in correcting this today?"
His response was, "Shut up B&^%*H, I wasn't talking to you!"

I informed him that since I was the SM, if he expected anything to be done, I was the ONLY one he would talk to and he would stop with the language. Now, I'm only 5'2" myself, but I train 1200lb horses and I would gladly take this punk down so he doesn't bother me in the slightest. I again reaffirmed our offer to split the late fee's which he himself stated were of his own doing. He then threatened to take his business elsewhere. Now that thought was breaking my heart! I looked at his account and very matter of factly told him that we obviously didn't have his business anyway. In the past year and a half, he had rented 5 movies and 3 were in 1 visit. So, if he felt his business was better served elsewhere then so be it. That did it and the bastard took a swing at me! He tried to punch a girl! I ducked out of the way and told my MIT to call the cops. As he ran out of the store he slammed the door open so hard he broke the glass.

Two weeks later, I get a call from this same loser saying that he is disputing the fact we have sent him to collections. I know it's him because I recognize the amount and his voice. So, I make him wait while I walk back to the office to take the call. When I pick up the phone he says, "Oh...I've talked to YOU before! You're that B*^#H, just give me your boss' number." I tell him he'll have to hang on again while I go up front and get that for him. Of course I know it by heart, but I'm just being an ass now.

So he calls my District Manager who happens to be a very good friend of mine to this day. He starts out by saying that now that MEN are handling the situation, maybe something can be accomplished! Little does he know, my boss is so beyond gay it is not even funny. BIG time fem! So my boss tells him that I offered more than he ever would have. After 30 minutes, Tavish hangs up on him too.

A few days later I get a call from the VP of the company. He goes through the whole thing and how this customer is demanding this and that and wants to know what I'M going to do for him. I let him know that, after what this man verbally and physically put me through, I will GLADLY walk him across the street to the competitor and help him fill out their application. If they wanted more than that, I would walk....right then....no notice....and my whole staff agreed to come with because that said what they thought of employee safety.

We never heard from or saw Tavish again. Hope the competitor loves him as much as we did!

A good friend of mine used to be an SM for a video store. She once told me that she loved dealing with sucky customers. Every time she banned someone from the store she was high for the rest of the day!

She is now a DM for the company.
      "Wouldn't that be unethical?"
"That's only an issue for those who aren't already in Hell."

Just a minute here. The guy attempted assault and vandalized company property. Please, for the sake of what little sanity we all have, tell me he got an unpleasant visit from the cops? He hates late fees so much, how about some criminal fines?

We'd all love to hear that he got charges pressed against him. But we also all know that's not how corporate sees things. Who cares if the pawns get hurt as long as The Almighty Customer is happy?!

In a perfect world, Tavish would be behind bars for attempted battery, as well as having paid for both his late fees and the door glass. Then again, in a perfect world, there would be no need for customerssuck.com.

A video store with an adult section gets several classes of customers. The sucky ones will either scare you, make you question how anyone could think humans were of divine origin, or outright disgust you.

The ones that will outright disgust you are the ones who rent several videos then return them the same day with a certain substance on them then proced to rent more videos. They turbo fastforward through the tapes.

Wow... just... wow... I can't believe that asshat would do something like that, then have the balls to try and get you in trouble with corporate over not giving in to him. I had a great time working at Blockbuster, though, and didn't get a single person like that in 2 years as crew there. Then again, I can look Tavish The Bastard in the eye without lifting my chin and have a great 'talk the crazy off the ledge' voice.

It really, really sucks how much some fucktards think they can intimidate people into doing what they want, and it ESPECIALLY pisses me off because guys like that give other tall guys a bad reputation. Once, while applying for a VERY sweet job, I was told that I was nearly perfect for the position I was applying for, but he couldn't hire me because the Big Boss made the final call and SHE didn't want to risk a huge guy intimidating customers.

And yes, I checked, since the objection was my SIZE that was the issue, not my status as a male of the species, it doesn't fall under prohibited discrimination.

Are you serious? I think discrimination of any sort is illegal.

But that's not what I was going to say, I just wanted to point out that Chesterfield and West County were both movie stores. Only, non-rental.
And, thus have I crossed that line from too little to too much info. I should probably shut my gob.

I love working in the video store. While I have my fair share of crazy-asshat's-and-their-late-fees stories the truth of the matter is SC's like that guy can happen anywhere.

This WAS Blockbuster of all places...seemingly benign and supposedly the top of its game. And no, they did nothing to the customer. Again, their first thought was that I should do something for him. Yeah....like kick him in the nuts....and I can kick that high!!!!

Nope. Only age, color, disability, national origin, race, religion, or sex. SOmetimes also sexual orientation, but that's on a state by state basis.
Thank you. Exactly. According to the state's laws, if her problem had been that she didn't want any icky men in her stores, I could have gotten monetary compensation based on my offered starting pay and hours, as well as 'reasonably expected' raises over the course of several years if I felt (as I did) that a court order to provide me with employment would leave me in a severely hostile work environment.

But, because it's the fact that I've got a build like a heavy-duty linebacker and stand, depending on posture and footwear, between 6'4" and 6'6", I was completely SOL. It does come in handy, though, when dealing with customers. People just don't seem to be able to work up a proper head of steam when they're dealing with a guy my size being calm, polite, and reasonable at them.

The funny thing is, it's not up corporate about pressing charges for attempted assault. That's the employees right. Or to put it better, that's an individual civilian's right as to whether or not they want to press charges. It doesn't matter that you work for a company or are on the clock. If you wanted to sue them for harrassment for verbal abuse, you can do so, not as an employee, but as a civilian in court.

The broken glass is corporate's problem; but if they demanded you withdraw from pushing charges, you could turn around and sue them for creating a hostile work environment. They'd get whooped for not allowing you to defend yourself against attack. And obviously your whole staff would be on your witness list.

As height is an immutable characteristic like race, color and sex, I would have taken your case in a heartbeat. The purpose of anti-discrimination laws is to prevent unfair treatment based upon things the individual cannot change. Many court opinions have stated this as the purpose of such statutes. If the job for which you were applying did not have a legitimate limitation on how tall or short the person performing it needed to be for safety or performance, I think you would have had a good case.

Imagine if she had turned down someone because they had the condition known as dwarfism. The howls of discrimination would be deafening.
