The days immediately following the Virginia Tech shootings, people swarmed the craft store looking for all manner of things orange and maroon. By Wednesday were were all out of orange shirts and almost completely out of orange and maroon ribbon.

One woman actually said to a co-worker...when she found out that we didn't have the orange and maroon ribbon...

"You all should have been prepared for this!"

My mind still boggles.

Apparently, not only are we in retail supposed to be able to pull merchandise out of thin air, we are supposed to be able to predict the future as well.

We got a lot of that at the bookstore after September 11th. Allegedly, Nostradamus predicted the whole event. Not true, but it still caused a huge demand for anything remotely about him or his work. There was also a big demand for the Quran for the same reason. That one was a hoax too, of course.
People still insisted that it was in there and we should have had lots of them in advance since we must have known about these predictions.

If you had been "prepared" for this, you would have raised a lot of eyebrows because you obviously knew something about the shooting that no one else did, and did nothing but buy more ribbon.

To give her the (undeserved, more than likely) benefit of a doubt, she could have ment that graduatios were coming up anyway, so you should have prepared for them.
