  • Open Letter to My Management Company

I left this on the management company's website under Contact Us:
I usually contact my management team here at [Apartment Complex Name] in [City] and that requires a long letter, as I work the same hours they do. I have no desire to hand-write one and push it through their door yet again so I am putting this here.

This morning at 4:30 am I was awoken out of a dead sleep by music. In fact, after becoming coherent I realized I was dreaming about what I was hearing. Now this is a fairly noisy neighborhood between the factory down the street and the less-than-desirable complexes in the immediate area. My first reaction was to open my window to determine if it was coming from one of those, as I didn't wan to blame any actual neighbors. I walked to and from the window to check. No, it seemed to be coming from the southwest part of the building. Not wanting to assume anything, I put on my coat and in my exhausted state walked entirely around the building to see/hear where it was coming from. The only lighted apartment beside mine was 16 on the northeast side. I walked upstairs and put my ear to the door of the apartment that is connected to me diagonally and I did hear a lot of people. I couldn't hear loud music, but possibly music. It may or may not have been that unit. I just don't know. But I do know that by and large over the NINE years I've been here people have not respected quiet hours so I would not put this past most of these tenants. It's common, but it's not right.

I did call the [Town] Police's non-emergency line but of course it was closed. Yes, I have the number programmed into my phone because I have to call several times a year. I really like my apartment: the layout, the decor, the storage, the view, the price. [management team] are great, too. I don't actually want to leave. I would just like to be able to sleep through until 7:00 am. I want to be able to hear myself think after 10:00 pm. I'd like to hear doors closed rather than slammed (something else that sometimes happens at 4:30 am). In fact, what is it about 4:30 am?? I've often woken up around that time which causes a night terror. Do you know what that is? It's a literal panic attack in one's sleep. It's not all in one's head; there are physical, terrifying symptoms. I suspect if there weren't slamming doors and loud music at that time then night terrors would be largely preventable.

I can only come to the conclusion that jobless insomniacs are attracted to this place? I've been close to jobless myself at times but I always respected others' need to sleep. It's just common courtesy, which is not common anymore. I really wish I could say definitively which apartment it was, but I just can't. I just needed to be heard. I needed to be heard over the noise reverberating through the thin walls here.

You have my sympathy. This kind of thing is why my youngest sister had to find a new apartment. She'd only been living in the first one for a few months before the noise and other stuff became intolerable, and the building manager was completely useless. She ended up moving to a place more expensive than she wanted, because there will only be one other tenant in the place.

Sounds like the last apartment building that I lived in. Neighbour on the one side was a drunken party-hearty type who played his music at top volume, and with the bass at top level, at all hours of the day and night ... and as you say, management was totally useless. And I had a studio apartment so it's not like I could get physically very far away. I was never so glad to get out of a place in my life. It's the one reason I'm somewhat worried about moving back into an apartment building.

        Food Lady, my sympathies.

Back when I was still in my old apartment in the city, a guy moved into the apartment above me. He was a nice enough guy for the most part, but he didn't seem to understand that blasting his (c)rap at 3 a.m. wasn't cool. I called the cops on him so many times, I still remember their number, even though I moved out of there 25 years ago.
