  • You think you're so smart...

This is a story repeated to me by one of my favorite sups...

We sell these special tix for Universal-Orlando, and a prior package we offered was around $500... it included a lot of things, including 4 season-passes for the park. It was a pretty sweet deal too.

Anyway, we had a member, a young lady, quite a while back return these tix back to us. They said they used them once and they had such a horrible experience (too hot, bad service, etc.) We allowed the return (because our returns policy is really good, so most of us thought nothing of it).

So we send these back to the vendor, and it's okay, right? Well, I wouldn't be telling this story if so. Turns out that when you bring these cards to the park, you activate them and register your name and information, and it is logged in their system every time you visit the park.

Turns out these folks had used these passes SEVERAL times. Enough for 2-3 vacations.

    Naturally, our SM was angry.

According to my sup, our SM called the family and said that they got the confirmation from Universal-Orlando on how many times they had used them, and that since they were used many times past their worth, he would be requesting that they return the refund they received or face legal action regarding defrauding a major corporation.

I find out tomorrow exactly how this ended. I'm not sure if we had a real legal basis for a case, but the sup was also a loss prevention officer for the NE region of about 5 years for our company, so he knows what he's talking about.

I'm just in awe of my SM, because I know so many managers that would be pissed but write it off as a loss, even though it was a lot of money... but we don't take no $#!% from scammers, I guess!

Boy howdy! Yes, I do want to know how this ends. I HATE scammers! It was posting on another Customer_suck community (lj) about a scammer (insurance scam) that I was directed to this site to begin with.

Why didn't your manager call the park first to see if the tickets had been used at all? Or, maybe, you guys could've been hooked into their lookup system in some way...?

Well, we knew they had been used at least once, but not to the extent that it was used. It's near impossible to verify immediately on them, and we had to go through our vendor first. The vendor was the one to make the discovery, and the lying is what made the manager mad, mostly.

We have the contact information of all our shoppers too, so scamming us is very hard to do.

          Good for him!

The place I used to rent games from, a wonderful little comic shop now gone (owner retired), used to have the most vindictive owner. I liked him a lot. Once, a guy rented about ten games (no rental limit, you got the cash, you can take them out. Great for parties.) then skipped town. The owner actually hired a PI to track the guy down and sent the cops after him.

He not only got the games back, but he told everyone who came in about it. He said, "If people know I'm nuts about this kinda thing, they'll go somewhere else to steal."

That comment just made me bust out laughing for some reason.

I am an annual pass holder to Universal Orlando, Busch Gardens/Sea World, and Disney World, and I can tell you that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the service at Universal Orlando. I go there at least once quarterly (I actually leave on Saturday for my next vacation) and the staff absolutely rocks! Now, it is hotter than hell, but I already live in Florida so I am used to it

Keep us updated about what happens!

I've been to Universal Studios and Sea World and had an amazing time! I don't know how anybody could complain about the heat...yeah it was very hot, but I'd rather be warm and dry than cold and rained on (we had storms a few times when I was there)...then again, here in Britain if the sun even peeps out from behind a cloud then we all wear shorts, so ANYWHERE is "very hot" compared to here. The staff were so lovely as well. Hope you get the scammers!

If they had been truthful, then I could understand they're upset about bad service. But the weather? Where exactly did they think Universal-Orlando was? Canada? I mean, really. It's an outdoor theme park. Not exactly climate-controlled.

Sorry, just pisses me off when people gripe about things we have absolutely NO control over.

I checked with my sup about what happened.

Apparently these folks did not reply to the manager's message, so we blocked their account until they talked. They came in one day to do a return, the refunds clerk opened the account, and there is it in big blue letters, "MUST SEE SM. DO NOT ALLOW TO SHOP." So, they ended up going into the office, and they had a little talk...

These people tried everything! First they claimed it wasn't them, it was their daughter using their account. Lie. Accounts are non-transferable and we check ID. They had used a check to purchase these tickets and we verify all ID and checks over a certain amount before they leave with the big purchase.

Then they said they already paid him back.... it's pretty easy to miss $500 here, people... it gets logged as soon as you make a transaction with us in the system... they did not pay.

THEN they claim they never used the passes and they don't owe him a thing! (Uh... no)

It ends with them storming out of the store screaming that they'll never shop here again, we're a bunch of thieves, etc.

                        ...drumroll...

THEY COME BACK THE NEXT WEEK.

They try to sign up for a new membership... we enter in all their information... including their driver's license... BEEP! There it is in big letters, DUPLICATE LICENSE NUMBER. We pull up the other account, and there it is, the DO NOT LET SHOP. Naturally, they flip out.

We call the SM, he comes down, tells them to follow him into the office. They say no, they want another account, we're thieves, etc.... AND THEY PULL OUT THEIR PHONE AND CALL THE POLICE!

Naturally, the SM is loving this. They wait for the police... and slowly it dawns on these people exactly what's about to go down. They FLY out of the store. The police come, and our SM ends up showing them all the information and accounts, as well as security tape of them returning the item. The police take a report, and leave.

Apparently, according to the police officers that come in every week talking to my sup, they eventually got caught, charged with theft by deception, and had to pay the full amount to us plus community service to get out of jail time.

Their pictures now bless the corkboard in our SM's office, with about 2 dozen other pictures under a sign that declares BANNED FOR LIFE.
