  • shoplifter today...

    We had 4 of us working noon to 4pm today.

    Me
    CW1 = Coworker 1
    CW2 = Coworker 2
    CW3 = Coworker 3
    CWF = Coworker 3's relative / Coworker 2's friend

    I was working the counter.
    CW1 was stocking the shelves.
    CW2 Was sitting on his butt talking to CWF instead of being outside pumping gas.
    CW3 was outside pumping gas.

    This young male comes in and walks to the back far side of the store. I see him counting change and looking at the boxes of cigars, thinking theres no way he is old enough. He then looks behind him at the snack cakes and holds one up and asks me how much it is. I tell him as another young male enters and walks back that way to grab a coke.

    They say hi and shake hands and the new customer comes up and pays for a coke and leaves. The young male is still back there looking and I am keeping an eye on him and waiting on other customers as they enter. CW1 has disappeared, and CW2 is still sitting on his butt. When I notice that the young male keeps looking up at me and acting nervous I motion for CW2 to get up and keep his eyes open. He doesnt and just says "keep your eyes on him!".

    This older lady enters the store and walks over to where the young male is and gets out "whats taking you so lo..." when I hear CW1 YELL "Empty your F*CKING pockets!".

    All hell breaks loose. Young male pulls out one box of cigars and says "sorry" but CW1 tells him he wants the rest because he has been watching him on camera stuffing his pockets when I was busy with customers. Young male says "fuck you, I am getting out of here" and heads towards the front of the store.

    CW1 is right on his butt and almost grabs him just as they reach the door. CW1 had a hold of his shirt but since he was streatching and they were kinda running he fell out the door and the young male ended up on top of him. CW1 grabs the young males ankle and trips him as he starts to run away. Young male gets up and takes off. CW2 and CWF did nothing, I was stuck behind the counter because other people were in the store.

    CW1 is mad at all of us because we left him get away. I tried telling him I wasnt sure we could put out hands on him and I didnt want to get a fine or something for snatcxhing up a young teen.

    Well later I was outside pumping gas and this guy was yelling at a gas customer about money, crack, a $4,000 fine, etc... I left it go for a few minutes then seen CW1 looking outside so I gave him the sign to call 911. He didnt have to because a lady was inside who was with the gas customer and she called them.

    Well after that was all taken care of one of the police officers came in to get snuff and we told him about the young male. The officer told me we can do anything needed to keep them there until the police arrive. So yes I could have tripped the young male or even pushed him to the floor. He said I wouldnt get into trouble because of the type of crime it is.

    I told him I was always told by other officers that we couldnt do anything to keep them there. Just get any info we could and to call 911. He said thats not true. He said something about it even being written into the law thats in the law books.

    Guess we will find out, the next shoplifter I catch and tell them to have a seat on the floor while the police are called who takes off we be forced to the floor and held there. The owner of the store is very good to us and treats all of us good and I hate when some loser rips him off. Yes sometimes its only a $0.95 lighter but when we are the cheapest around because he doesnt mark stuff up real high it really does hit the bottom line. That same $0.95 lighter you can get from us is $1.25+ at other places. That $0.99 pop? $1.40+ at other places.

    These are the same cops that in the past have said everything is a "civil matter" and they won't come out for squat??
    Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

      Every place I've worked has said that if the shoplifter is heading out the door, ask them to stop, but don't try to do it physically. Never know what they're on or what they're carrying and it's not worth you getting injured or your life....Not that we didn't try to a couple of times at the Green & White place, sometimes instincts just take over.

        Having rolled on the floor with plenty of shoplifters I can tell you that the worst people to try and detain are women.

        They dont fight.

        They gouge, they squeeze, they scratch, they bite, they pull.

        Men on the other hand punch, kick and flail around pathetically, always, always go for the chap!

            I suppose legally you have the right to stop them, but my company's policy is that employees are not to confront a suspected shoplifter. Better safe than sorry and all that. Plus unless you have been watching the person constantly and saw them pocket something and don't lose sight of them until they leave the building, you can't accuse them because you don't know that they didn't put it down somewhere. Their preferred strategy is deterrence through extreme customer service.

              Oh, no. We do fight. We just don't observe "the rules". We will hit below the belt. And, as you said, employ various other techiques. This is why they really don't want women in hand-to-hand combat.

                Yes but the officer I talked to is the only one that tells me the others are wrong and its NOT a civil matter when they tell me it is. Plus could be times are changing, we got a new police chief, mayor, and district attorney. The DA has come out in the news and said he will do NO DEALS. You do the crime you WILL do the time.

                Old DA is now being investigated by the FBI and the old police chief had a rule that everyone will FEAR the police or else. So he had the police treating criminals and victims the same.

                  Reminds me of the time a Shoplifter ran out of my mums shop as I was about to go in, manager spots me, tells me to give chase, knowing that very few people can outrun me. So I leg it, then use my tried and tested tackle, shoulder in the small of the back, arms around their legs just above their knees, pull hard using my shoulder as a fulcrum. Let me tell you, not too many people can get up right away after a face full of pavement.

                    We have this kid on "tape".. Wonder how much legal trouble there would be if we printed a frame of it and put up a notice that he is a shoplifter... :P

                          But you're doing the community a valuable service by warning people that he's a thieving little bastard, oh won't someone think of the community

                            Actually, I don't think there's anyway he could stop you putting up a shot from your security cam that shows him stealing. Or even just a good shot of his face with the word "shoplifter" since he did shoplift. One of my coworkers at the bakery also works at a gas station, and they have a flip book with the faces of everyone who is banned. Mostly shoplifters. Granted this is behind the counter, but still...

                            You should do it

                              Actually I don't believe it is illegal. At least not if you have a sign up stating you have cameras. There was a situation at one of the stations I worked at years ago. Three teens from a couple towns over came in to the store late at night about 30 minutes before the cut off. They had obviously been experienced. They had the girl of the group distract the clerk on duty that night with some sob story, then a few minutes later the two guys came in and stuff all the booze they could in their track suits. The clerk was pretty sure the two guys were up to something but the girl was in hysterics and she stood in just such a way that she blocked the clerks view of the alcohol isle.
                              Well the store had a really nice digital video system, and took crystal clear pictures of all of them. The manager checked with the local police and printed the best frames of the three out and posted them up in the windows, which ended up being how they were caught, someone in their own family ended up turning them in.
