  • Body Mods and the reactions.

I work at a convenience store. As long as I come into work and wear the uniform and they don't give a rats a** about my appearance.

I have large gauges in my ears and currently have blue silicone tunnels in them. I was hired with my ears stretched and the only thing my manager has ever said about them was "Those are very blue...have you seen where I left my coffee?"

For some strange reason a lot of random customers have been noticing my ears recently. One very nice lady who looked to be in her mid forties, dressed in a sweater set and pearls said "Oh those are nice, and pretty too, you don't normally see pretty ones like that. Was it hard to find blue ones?"

On the other hand I had a heavily tattooed older guy ask me if I really want sagging earlobes when I'm forty, and a younger man grill me in a very nasty way about how they had to be against company policy and why was I allowed to keep them?

It goes to show you that appearances really mean nothing when it comes to how someone will react to things.

At the library I work at, this guy would come in, with make-up like the Crow, and a noose around his neck. The librarians never asked (though most were curious, and a few were freaked out) but one day a patron asks him, "why do you dress like that? to get attention?" and he nodded; I think just to shut her up and be able to read his email in peace.

I usually ask about the process and where the interesting items (like the earrings) can be found. I have no qualms about it.

I feel your pain. I have my ears spaced to 14mm as well as snakebites.
Some of the time I don't mind people asking me about them, but other times I really want to punch people in the neck.

No I do not hold pencils in my ears.
Yes I know I have "something on my face".
No they didn't hurt, but thanks for being the millionth person to ask me that.
No I will not take my earrings out so you can "see what it looks like".
No you may NOT tug on my ears or reach for my face because you're "just curious".
Yes I've thought about life at 65 with my mods. No I'm not concerned about it.

          I could go on...

:-( This post makes me miss my stretched ears. I was at zero gauge when I shrank them to look for jobs (yes I regret letting them shrink). I screwed myself over though, I tended to buy really pretty (often custom) and expensive jewelry at each size and blissfully thinking I'd never need to back track I'd give away my smaller sizes. STUPID, almost everyone I gave my lovely jewelry to managed to lose or break almost minutes after receiving it. If I'd kept my small sizes I'd be back and probably bigger by now. I don't want to buy all the pretty stuff again but I would hate to stretch with the cheap plain stuff (I'm a sucker for Ti and glass). Enjoy your pretty stretched ears fellow CSers. Mine shrank fantastic 14g takes effort to put in now.

My below the waist piercing is slowly making its way to 6g so I guess it fills the void kinda sorta.

They tend to notice in spurts, don't they? Like, nobody will say anything for months, then a buttload of people start asking about them, then it's nothing again? That's how it is for me. A lot of the time it's the same people asking the same questions.

I like that the tattooed man gave you a hard time. Did you ask him what he thought his tattoos would look like in a few more years?

                    yes. shutup.

I'm just kidding, the handful of times i've been on my bike, the wind and motor in combination are too loud to notice... but I do have large dangly gauges that are wing shaped.. the ends are very pointy and sharp, if i forget to to take them off before i put on my helmet, they stab me in the face and neck and sometimes get caught in the fabric of my helmet...

I get an involuntary reaction to some body mods. Just can't help it ... some make me queasy. I try not to let it show, as it's really not my business. I just don't look.

I like body mods. I myself don't have any, but perhaps it's a generation thing that the older people & more conservative types need to just accept. I don't know why it's so weird, considering there have been cultures all around the world for...forever that do body mods for various reasons. silly humans...

I was in a Barnes and Noble near my job the other day, talking to the cashier who rang me out (about the whole nail polish thing seen way back in "Apparently I'm offensive") and she had three piercings in her ears.
At one point, she told me the job had told her any more than three piercings was unprofessional. So she took out her hoop earrings, and said, "Okay, does this look professional, then? Professionalism is on the inside."
                          I agreed with her.

Oh, how I wish professional were just "on the inside." I'd be making six figures right now.

But it's really naive to think that even a large fraction of people accept that. Presentation is an important part of business, and impressions count.

I only comment on body mods if I like someone's tattoo. Other than that, do what you like, it's your flesh.

My eyes do gravitate toward people's facial piercings, though. I don't mean to stare and I try not to but I think it is natural when the symmetry of someone's face is thrown off balance, for your eyes to focus on the 'interruption'. Although I suppose if you have body mods you do it because you want people to notice.
