I work the switchboard for the college I work for, but I'm a dispatcher for the college police dept. too.
When I start to have problems with people who call back over and over again, I start to awnser "bsdajksfsfk police department?" Either they go "OMG WHAT? SRY? *click*" or they go "How'd I get this? I called the main number? What? I need ..........."
Another problem is that the Financial Aid office usually stops awnsering the phones about 10 minutes until they close. If it's not that, then they are just hella busy and the call gets dropped.
Well just a few moments ago, I had this woman call.
"blebebleblebl switchboard?"
"Oh, hi. This woman in the business office just transferred me to the fin.aid office and gave me the **** extension and it's obviously wrong."
"Um, well that's the right extension and they should be open for 10 more minutes, but I can transfer you back down there."
"...Okay."
*little bit later*
"jsfkjsdfjksfdkjsdfjhwerbn switchboard?"
"OKAY, I JUST TALKED TO SOMEONE AND THEY TRANSFERRED ME TO THE FIN AID AND THEY AREN'T PICKING UP AND *TYRADE*"
"Well, if they aren't picking up, then they aren't there."
"WELL TRANSFER ME THEN WHAT THE HELL?"
*moment later*
"*holding tone from holding number key down* *tooooonnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeee*"
"*click*"
Then she does this for 5 more minutes or so, calling and then hanging up.
So, after the 3rd time she does this, I just got sick of it.
"uirsuioiouwreuiowji police department?"
"The what...how the hell did I get to this? I called the main line and then I got you , and I was just trying to get a hold of someone in the fin. aid, and the stupid people at the main line keep giving me the wrong number and yeah."
"...well the switchboard is in the police department. If no one down there is picking up, that means that they AREN'T there. That's the correct extension and unforutantely there's no voicemail line or anything like that. You'll just have to call back tomorrow between 8-5pm. Mk?"
"O. Okay. Well, can you transfer me to the business office?"
"Yeah. *transfer*"
...God. I hate that. I hate when people give me a whole bunch of crap because they are retarded. It's annoying.
