  • It's Not Out Yet

I get a call from a customer asking if we have the new Richard Gere movie on DVD yet. I asks him to describe the film to me in the hopes that it will jog my memory.

As the customer explains it, I realize he is talking about the newest film, the one that isn't due in theaters for another couple of weeks or so. I tell him that it's not even out yet. He asks me if we will be getting it on DVD this week.

I explain again that the film is not even out in theaters yet so likely it won't be on DVD for months. He thanks me and then says "I'll call back next week and check if it you guys have it."

Used to get that all the time at the Chesterfield...
"Yeah, I'm looking for that new Jim Carrey movie...?"
      "Eternal Sunshine...?"
"No, the new one... where he has multiple personalities?"
"The one that hasn't even hit theaters yet?"
      "Yeah."
      "We don't have it."
      "I call murder on that!"

Do people not know how long it takes for a movie to go from Theater to DVD?

Oh wait, that's too smart for the average moron... silly EQ.

I may have been sucky once

I remember asking video store clerks for History of the World part II.
It took a lot of NOs before I realized that Mel Brooks never made a Part II. Just that teaser on the end of part I.

New titles before they've even hit the theater? Come on! Although nowadays, it seems the DVDs are in stores before the show has left the theaters...

Oh, please? I'd have snatched up Wall*E the moment I left the theater, if it were only true...

It's true. I believe some movies are out 8 weeks after screen release. Studios wanted to shorten the time; exhibitors with millions of $ invested in theaters of course protested furiously. It has become a problem for long-tail and second run theaters. It used to be months. With the internet, file sharing, and piracy, they have to grab the revenue as quick as possible. </threadjack>

Gah I hated those people. When i sometimes covered Electronics for WM, we had a list of movies and their repective release dates. People still asked for DVD's that wouldn't be released for weeks. Oh, wait SCs can't/won't read. My bad.
