  • Well hello to you too!!

    Not really sucky, just rude.
I've worked at this place for a year and never had anything to this degree happen.

    Me: Hi!! How are you?
Him: *No eye contact, no "Hello," no grunt...nothing*
Me: *thinking*okkkkk.....(I ring up his order) "Would you like to apply for a <store credit card>?"
    Him: *No response*
    Me: Your total is $xx.xx...
Him: *Hands me money, quiet as death*
Me: *Get his change* Have a great night!!!!
    Him: *No response, walks away*

...I really hope he was deaf. And if he was, he should have said so, I know sign language, and I'll use it when a semi-regular deaf customer comes in(I love her, and she always seems very happy that I'm signing ). I love signing. If he wasn't deaf, he needs to work HARD on his people skills. Seriously? You can say "Hello," and "Thank you," ...Not that hard

This happens to me at least once a day.

The worst was when this guy was buying the latest book by Naomi Novik (a fantasy writer who has a current series) and I said, "Oh, I love Temeraire! I cant wait to see if Peter Jackson makes the movie!"

Now usually, when you exhibit knowledge about a book someone is buying, particularly if it is a series they like, they will be happy about it. Or they will at least respond.

This ass completely ignored me, and I know he wasn't deaf because he gave me exact change (we don't have a readout customers can see).

This happened about 4 weeks ago and I am still annoyed about it.

My sister is extremely quiet and rarely talks. She hates going into stores for precisely that reason, because the clerks often try to engage her in conversation and she's too shy to talk to them. She has trouble making eye contact, as well. In fact, it is so stressful to her that she tries to frequent stores that have self-checkouts so she doesn't have to deal with cashiers. Having a cashier get excited and loudly go "Ohhhh, I love this book! You're gonna love it! Have you read his other books?" or something like that makes her want to cringe and crawl under the nearest table.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

And others are jerks. It's like the majority of the customers who come through my line basically think that we are beneath them and shouldn't be talking to them at all.

Like a pair of ladies a while back I overheard talking about the Prince Caspian movie. One was asking the other if it was pretty good and while ringing up the purchases I happened to mention that I had recently seen it and loved it.

The one turned to me and rather snobbishly replied, "We weren't talking to you."

I wanted to say, "Forgive me for trying to lower myself to your level ma'am. Have a nice day."

My ex-husband is so socially phobic that until he moved in with me, he couldn't even go into a fast food restaurant and order for himself. He'd only go with friends or with me. He couldn't call to order a pizza or phone for a taxi if he was stranded. So what does loving girlfriend do to him? Gets him a job as telephone tech support He was most annoyed with me, but he stuck with it for over a year until he got a better job that didn't require him to socialize LOL (He's now a crabby network architect with the gov't and widely known as "that guy who doesn't talk")

He generally won't go shopping on his own, even now, but when he does, he'll keep the talking to the absolute minimum to get through the transaction. Last time I took him to the grocery store, the only word I heard him mumble at the cash register was "debit" LOL He seems rude, but he's really just terrified of talking to people.

I was really crazy-shy like that before, but at least I would try and LOOK at the person I was dealing with, even for a moment. Even while I was terrified of the cashier, I was still very aware that he/she was human, and deserved SOMETHING.

If I have had a Bad Day or if my Knee Hurts, I won't talk. Possibly because I might say something regrettable. I will acknowledge your presence with a really tight smile.

My first thought for this customer would be something in teh Autistic range.

My second thought was that one cashier around here who hates anyone to talk to him/her at all would love this guy.

She's announced a movie? When did I miss that?

Also, I need to check if the library has the latest one yet. I have to wait 'till it comes out in paperback to buy it, because I'm anal and need for all my series to be the same type.

Peter Jackson bought the rights for the first novel, but whether it will ever get made remains to be seen.

And I understand shyness, I have been shy most of my life. But even when I was cripplingly shy (about 8th-9th grade) I still managed to say 'Hi' and 'Thank you'. That's no excuse for rudeness.

I can say I'm shy, but when I go into a store I usually listen up and try to talk to the person behind the counter because, well hey, we've all been there.

Though I kinda hate it when I see a group of people come in, laughing and smiling, having a good time, so you think "I will greet them with a hearty 'Hello! how are ya'll!?"(but not as to interrupt their conversation) Then there is the uncomfortable silence and they frown at you. Sometimes I get that though at the first sound of 'ya'll'. It makes me
