  • You want what?

I just remembered this story. It happened several years ago but the details have stuck in my mind.

So after checking in, I head over to my shift in the Children’s Department. It was fairly busy with lots of kids and parents. I noticed two “ladies” standing in front of juvenile fiction with sour expressions on their faces. With them was a boy about 9-10 years old. As I came in, the coworker I was relieving whispered to me “Don’t sell them any book reports.” Making good his escape, I barely had time to ponder his words before the women approached me.

    Me: should be obvious
L: apparently the mother of the boy
    OL: the boy’s grandmother
B: boy who looked like he couldn’t care less

L: “Where are your book reports?”
Me: (Not quite understanding) “Do you mean book synopses? We have Sparknotes…”
L: (interrupting) “No, I mean book reports that can be turned in for school.”
Me: (Aha! So that’s what he meant.) “…We…don’t sell those…”
OL: “What?! You mean he has to read a book himself?
    Me:
L: “What store around here sells book reports?”
Me: “No store that I know of has book reports for sale.”
OL: (To B)“I’m sorry honey, the mean book lady says you have to actually read the book yourself.”
B: (Appears to ignore them both)
L: (Sighing with aggravation) “Alright then, what’s a historical fiction book set in (obscure time period) that’s less than a 100 pages?”
Me: “I’m sorry ma’am, the fiction section is organized by author’s last name and not by genre. Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything; I’m afraid you’re going to have to browse.” (edges away)
OL: (overheard as I fled) “We should complain to a manager. It’s ridiculous that people can’t buy book reports here – he actually has to read them himself!”

I could have helped them look but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. What type of ignorant irresponsible cretin would waltz into a bookstore and get upset that the company will not knowingly help someone cheat? If I had the phone number of that boy’s teacher I would have given him/her a call. Just thinking about this still makes me mad.

Sorry ma'am, I'm afraid we can't do your son's homework for him. For those who aren't looking to promote plagerism and general laziness, you can find our history section over here

          That broke my brain.
I'm holding you responsible for the repairs - a gallon of ben n jerry's and hot fudge sauce should fix it up nicely.
Seriously...would it REALLY hurt widdle diddums to crack a book?? WTF?
The report button - not just for decoration

Guh....*Twitch* I don't think the Kid really cared. At all. Probably been watching the Americana version of Naruto and decided to be all Sasuke for the day what with the ignoring.

I seriously need to finish that series.

OK, I have to agree with the comment on contacting the teacher if there was a way too... that mother (incubator is probably a more appropriate term) was actually encouraging her son to plagerize that is beyond words.

For everyone who wonders why some people go through the school system who are dumber than sin...

                ...this is exactly why.
"That's too bad. Hospitals aren't fun to fight through."
"What IS fun to fight through?"
"Gardens. Electronics shops. Antique stores, but only if they're classy."

The American school system scares me, hell it scared me when I was in it, impressive feat to do to an 11 year old, I'm just glad my sister is going to be going to school in Japan and not the US.

Welcome to the wonderful world of education today. That is unfortunately not a rare example of parenting today. I know that there are many good parents out there ( and on this board) but I keep running into that type of parent with my students. The type of parent that says "My pwecious wittle baby can't be expected to actually DO HIS OWN WORK! You need to do it for him!!!" as they stamp their foot on the floor.

Oh, and if you had known who his teacher was and contacted them, this behavior would not have been a surprise. I would also hazard a guess that the book report was due that next day. I would also guess that the student had known about the book report for about a month or so.

Just my opinion. Don't mind me, its been a very long week (and its only Wednesday)

It's very sad but I'm not surprised at all. For at least the last 20 years we've been getting calls and E-mails asking for a 'nice little paper on (fill in the blank) that Bratleigh or Buford could hand in.

I still remember getting a spanking by mom for not reading a book and doing my book report like I was supposed to.My mom bought me books everytime she went to a place that sold books. Anyone remember the romona books and the babysitters club? And what about those choose your own adventure books? She also bought my those learning books where you rewrite the words and letters, she also bought me those BIG sketch books so I could draw and practice writing sentences.I can't imagine a MOM incouraging her son/daughter not to learn and read. When her kids grows and is a complete moron she'll be to blame. My fonest memory is when I was sick with the flu and couldn't leave my bed and she went and got the thickest book of fairy tales I've ever seen. I still have that book today and I still love it.

Personally, I think a lot of this trend comes from the fact that everyone gets judged on GRADES rather than actually knowing anything. So the grade, the not the knowledge, becomes the goal in too many people's minds. They don't realize that they're not only missing the point, but totally cheating themselves.
