  • Giving family members a hard time when they shop in your store?

    My last post tonight.

My mom drops in my store occasionally. Corporate policy, however, states that I cannot check out any relative on my register, nor can I check out friends from outside of work. Usually I make a scene out of saying hi to her and giving her a big hug in front of everyone and introducing her to a few people, and that's it, but... corporate policy doesn't say I can't pick on her a bit!

First off, I pointed her out to my boss and told him I was going to give her a hard time, and outlined what I had planned. He started cracking up and told me to go for it. At this point I had management approval!

She came in tonight, and I was pretty rough on her. I called my boss over as soon as she walked in and made him introduce himself to her (my mom was pissed that I did that, whining she didn't have her makeup on or her hair done... she's 61, my boss is 27, believe me he doesn't care or even notice someone in their 60s).

I had a coworker follow her around offering her nonstop help and generally being annoying. Then I started doing the same thing for a few minutes.

When she was checking out at express... on our phone system, if you dial an extension then hit *2 immediately, it goes onto speakerphone at that phone. I dialed the express phone and hit *2 and started yelling "GIVE HER A HARD TIME!" to the very confused coworker. My mom started pointing at me and laughing. Cashier later told me she was bitching about how I had everyone picking on her.

I had one of our baggers do a page... "Ann Smith, your parents are waiting for you at customer service. Ann Smith, please come up to customer service".

She walked out of the store just as I had our off duty police security walking in her direction though. He LOVES to give people a hard time, especially when one of us asks him to.

She probably hates me right now, but she'll get over it in a few days. I know she's going to be in the store again in a few days anyway.

(oh yeah, yes, I am an asshole. my parents had me paged to the front of the store PLENTY of times as a kid. revenge is a bitch)

Thankfully, my mom and I have a similar sense of humor. She said she enjoyed it.

My brother cards me every time I go to the liquor store he works at despite the fact I'm 3 years older than him.
