  • My Valentine's Day plans.

I know what a few of you are thinking. "But Jester! You loathe Valentine's Day! Why the sudden change in heart?" My answer is simple: There has been no change. I still loathe the holiday. I find it to be a crass materialistic fraud of a holiday perpetuated by greeting card companies, florists, and candy manufacturers, all looking to cash in on people's insecurities about love and romance. I find it to be an excuse holiday for non-romantic cheating clueless jackasses who use it to make up to their honeys for all that they did (or didn't do) in the previous year. I am a romantic, and think that true romantics don't need a holiday like this, for they will show their significant others romance throughout the year, not simply on this one ordained day. I have thought this my entire adult life, both when I was single and when I had a girlfriend. Some of my girlfriends agreed with me and understood, while some did not. (For the record I have a girlfriend this year, Nurse Betty, who is in Phoenix, so we will not be doing anything significant for the day. And honestly, I can't recall what her views are on all of this. I should bring it up next time we talk.)

This is not, however, a thread where I want to debate the worthiness of the holiday. I posted the above merely so y'all can understand what my personal feelings about the whole thing are, where I am coming from with my plans, and give me the appropriate advice towards my desired ends. If anyone wants to debate the pros and cons of Valentine's Day, please head towards fratching--this is not the place for it.

So, with all that in mind, my friend Little Red has a similar view of V Day as me, and we decided the other night that we need to go out on that day, since we will both be off that day, as I have Sundays off and she plans to have that one off. But when I say we are going out, I don't mean at all in the conventional way.

It started out that we figured we would go out wearing all black. And then it escalated. And it's getting into the realm of the theatrical. We are now planning on going all out in a black/funeral/gothy kind of way. I'll be wearing an undertaker's type tophat (picture Slash from Guns n' Roses), she is going to be wearing a black hat/veil combination. We are still figuring out the specifics, but we are going to cause a scene. We are actually considering wheeling around a small coffin, draped in black, possibly with the words "Valentine's Day," "love," or "romance" on it, or perhaps just a red heart. I may have a walking stick, and a long coat; she may have a black parasol and black roses. Basically we are going for the whole vaguely Elizabethan/goth thing, to make a statement.

We are not going to try to bother other people or ruin anyone's special day. We are, however, expressing our feelings on the matter, while enjoying a night out and costuming up.

Towards that end, I would welcome any and all costuming suggestions, including props. We have a little under a month to pull this all together. Suggestions are very welcome. Debates are not.

    Thanks.

Wow. I'm in shock. I have my own reasons to hating this day. Well, loath ti with a passion. Maybe one day I'll like it, but not anytime this decade.

That being said, if your not against make up, maybe put white paste on face, with upside down hearts. Hell, do the heart lipstick that Helena is doing for Alice in Wonderland movie coming up. That creep people out on that day.

I myself will not be doing makeup. But I do believe Red is going to whiten her face somewhat, and probably do black nail polish and/or lipstick. Possibly red lipstick. I dunno. That's her bag. I already have dark hair, and hers is a dark red, so we aren't really going the dyed hair route, though I could see myself making my hair jet black instead of the dark brown it is now. It could be interesting. But makeup? Me? Not likely, no.

Your idea bring back memories! When I was in college, a small group used to host a party called "Blue Valentine." On Valentine's Day, the various punk bands from the college would put on a show, everyone wore black, and each table had a single black rose in a vase.

        It was GREAT!

Actually this two man show is evolving. A couple of my friends might be coming along, and I might just make this into a pub crawl type drinking Event. Since so many of us down here know each other through myspace and facebook, I get the feeling I could get a decent crowd doing this. The Running of the Santas pub crawl was awesome, with about 20-30 people participating. It was my first year doing it, and I had a decent costume, but other people totally outdid me, with one of the ringleaders going as the sexiest Frosty the Snowman I have ever seen.

But I digress. I think a Black Valentine's Day/Valentine's Day Funeral pub crawl type thing could be hilarious. I have already located the top hat I want through a friend (borrowing is so much more economical than buying!), and am pretty sure I'll be able to get a small prop coffin through another friend, who runs the haunted house here every year.

Still hoping for more ideas from you folks, though.

And Joi, if everyone wore black, why did you call it "Blue Valentine"?

I've seen that Halloween picture. I'm now attracted to the Joker.

Not a clue why they did that. Seriously.

Well, I'm starting a LDR (Long Distance Relationship), however, Mother Nature as a sick sense of humor so we won't be arranging a visit for that weekend. I'm hoping we can do a late 'Valentine's Day' a week or so later - it depends on his schedule and when he can get PTO.

Sooo, I'll probably be heading out with my posse of girls. We're deciding whether to glam up and hit the town or potluck at someone's house and watch movies. Celebrate what you want, when you want, how you want.

That actually sounds like a great idea ... just make sure you do not look too much like Baron Samedi or it will be a mardi gras sort of thing ...

I'm going to the bar, having a few drinks, and picking up single women. I have a theory about picking up single women at the bar on Valentine's Day...

Naturally, you will have to tell me just who this Baron Samedi is, so I can avoid this eventuality.

And just what is this theory of yours?

And incidentally, I could have sworn you had a girlfriend....am I thinking of someone else?

I've had female issues but I broke up with my last girlfriend October of 2008.

And I'm not posting my theory on here. It's not exactly a nice one.
