I know what a few of you are thinking. "But Jester! You loathe Valentine's Day! Why the sudden change in heart?" My answer is simple: There has been no change. I still loathe the holiday. I find it to be a crass materialistic fraud of a holiday perpetuated by greeting card companies, florists, and candy manufacturers, all looking to cash in on people's insecurities about love and romance. I find it to be an excuse holiday for non-romantic cheating clueless jackasses who use it to make up to their honeys for all that they did (or didn't do) in the previous year. I am a romantic, and think that true romantics don't need a holiday like this, for they will show their significant others romance throughout the year, not simply on this one ordained day. I have thought this my entire adult life, both when I was single and when I had a girlfriend. Some of my girlfriends agreed with me and understood, while some did not. (For the record I have a girlfriend this year, Nurse Betty, who is in Phoenix, so we will not be doing anything significant for the day. And honestly, I can't recall what her views are on all of this. I should bring it up next time we talk.)
This is not, however, a thread where I want to debate the worthiness of the holiday. I posted the above merely so y'all can understand what my personal feelings about the whole thing are, where I am coming from with my plans, and give me the appropriate advice towards my desired ends. If anyone wants to debate the pros and cons of Valentine's Day, please head towards fratching--this is not the place for it.
So, with all that in mind, my friend Little Red has a similar view of V Day as me, and we decided the other night that we need to go out on that day, since we will both be off that day, as I have Sundays off and she plans to have that one off. But when I say we are going out, I don't mean at all in the conventional way.
It started out that we figured we would go out wearing all black. And then it escalated. And it's getting into the realm of the theatrical. We are now planning on going all out in a black/funeral/gothy kind of way. I'll be wearing an undertaker's type tophat (picture Slash from Guns n' Roses), she is going to be wearing a black hat/veil combination. We are still figuring out the specifics, but we are going to cause a scene. We are actually considering wheeling around a small coffin, draped in black, possibly with the words "Valentine's Day," "love," or "romance" on it, or perhaps just a red heart. I may have a walking stick, and a long coat; she may have a black parasol and black roses. Basically we are going for the whole vaguely Elizabethan/goth thing, to make a statement.
We are not going to try to bother other people or ruin anyone's special day. We are, however, expressing our feelings on the matter, while enjoying a night out and costuming up.
Towards that end, I would welcome any and all costuming suggestions, including props. We have a little under a month to pull this all together. Suggestions are very welcome. Debates are not.
Thanks.
