  • A new job has I.

So, I just got an offer from a new company today. I start November 8th. I've already turned in my 2 week notice to my current company, the one who's making me bald and overly stressed.

    I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!
    Coworker: Distro of choice?
    Me: Gentoo.
Coworker: Ahh. A Masochist. I thought so.

      Oh, thank goodness!

I'll miss your posts from your current place, but not nearly enough to want you to stay in that asylum.

Lots of luck with the new job!

        WTG!
The next 2 weeks should be fun, all the crazy anticts of your bosses, just for you to laugh about.

YAY!! I am happy for you! I don't pretend to understand even half of the tech stuff mentioned, but I do know a very unhealthy situation when I see one. I am glad you're gettin out of there. Here's to hopin that your new place is MUCH better!

Mostly MiM stuff if memory serves. Incompetent and cheap bosses with a huge sense of superiority where unwarranted.

So, later that day, I had a chat with a coworker who was at the admin meeting scheduled right after I turned in my 2 week notice. Sounds like people are bummed that I'm quitting, or are completely oblivious to my unhappiness, even though I told my supervisor point blank about 4 months ago that I'm job hunting, and am leaving as soon as I find something new.

Just now, the same senior admin who publicly berated me before wandered into the NOC where I work specifically to ask me why I'm leaving, why I'm unhappy, and where I'm going.

I told him point blank that the QA department isn't a QA department. The seniors make decisions that the other Junior admins and I deal with the fallout from, then laugh and call us reboot monkeys. I told him berating me publicly was horribly unprofessional and was out of line. I told him the company forcing tech support to lie to customers is a horrible breach of ethics, and I refuse to work for such a company.

Are you sitting? You should be. This one's a doozy.

He apologized to me. He apologized for publicly berating me, mistreating me, and he thanked me for being honest. He wished me the best at the new company. He also asked if I'm the only one unhappy. I told him not by a long shot, and that there will be LOTS of turnover very soon if something doesn't change.

I thanked him for talking to me, and told him that spoke volumes about his character. I told him noone's ever gone that far before, and usually I get shrugged off as "he's just moody" or "he doesn't know what he's talking about." Not having second thoughts, because I still can't work for a company with no business ethics, but I'm really impressed he came out and did that.

I guess all it took was a 15% turnover in the systems admin team in a 1 month period before he opened his eyes and started asking questions. (I'm the third admin to quit in a month, and all but the 3 top guys are unhappy and looking for jobs elsewhere.)

I'll be going to a large Japanese owned hosting company, working on a special team for a company out of Tokyo. For the new job, I'll be on call, travelling to Tokyo, and Hong Kong, and will need to learn Japanese, which I've started doing as of a few weeks ago.

                      Holy Paychecks, Batman!

Congrats on the new job, and wow - what a catch for the new one...Japan? Hong Kong? Wow. Just..wow.

Will your responsibilities there be similar to yours now? Or a little bit different, enough to stretch your brain?

I recently started a job at a NOC for a very big website. And it likes to go Tits Up at times. Challenging for me, at least, because I've been a hardware/PC/desktop person for a few years. I'm getting to work with some NEAT shit.

Back to you *ahem*. Super congrats, and the sys admin manned up. Good to see that.

PS don't dance too hard on the floor, you'll wear the carpet out :P

Since the servers will be in Hong Kong, and my strong point is hardware, it'll force me to get better with Apache, MySQL, and a few others. I can't just "bleh. Don't want to deal with things, so I'm going to hide in the data center and run cables." any more. :-)
