  • Having two jobs can be very tiring!

As I mentioned on the main board, I am still working at the games store part time and a sandwich shop more or less full time. Between the two jobs I will be working between 55 and 60 hours a week.

The past two days I've had to work the sandwich shop job from 6-1, then the games store job from 3-930. That makes for a very LONG day and with only two hours between jobs I don't get much time for myself. The other thing that sucks is by the time I get home from the games store, I have just enough time to scrape together a snack and watch a 30 minute TV show before bedtime.

Fortunately my body seems to be handling things well. I have been tired, but my energy levels have been where they need to be. This is the second time in my life I've worked two jobs at once. The first time didn't last long because I was let go from one of them.

I'm doing it basically because I have to for financial reasons, but so far it's been going good.

How many others out there have done the two job shuffle?

Out of the last 10 years, I've spent about 8 to 8-1/2 working two jobs. I'm only working one now, because I was emotionally very burned out and couldn't handle working retail anymore. Interestingly, my burning out coincided with me finally paying off my debt. No problems when I needed two jobs, need is an awesome motivator.

I would take care to make sure you aren't overloading yourself. For me, that meant having at least one day off a week to myself, so that I could sleep and re-energize. It also helped to maintain a focus on why I was working two jobs. Was I paying off my car, moving into my own place, what? Plus I really sold myself on the idea of how wonderful it was to pay off debt quickly and that working two jobs wasn't a big deal, since I wasn't doing anything anyway.

Dealing with two jobs is 99% mental. You're doing this for you. Tell yourself what a good thing you're doing and you'll be fine. Good luck.

I hear ya CC2d. I did that for 3 years between the gas station and the pizza place (around 75 hours a week but waaaayyyy over 80 near the end). as long as you do NOT run your body and mind down (sleep and food are essential but NO caffine energy drinks allowed) you should be fine for a while.

I worked a 60 hour week for a 3 month contract job, then 45 hours a week at my permanent job.

Did it once: one full time job and 2 part-time jobs. After about 5 months, I could feel myself slipping: specifically driving to work for my full time job was almost more than I could bear, so I had to drop both part time jobs. My full time job involved a lot of driving, so I might have lasted longer if I hadn't been concerned I was about to kill myself on the expressway.

I've been at the library for a little over ten years, and for about half that time, I've had a second part-time job. The following is just a few brief details on how the experience has been....

              - when Macy's was the second job, I worked about 50 hours a week in between jobs. It was VERY rare that I had a complete day off, and most of the stress came from working out scheduling conflicts - neither job provided set hours, and both wanted me to be available on weekends.

              - working at the church office has been a lot easier, as it's only open a few mornings a week. Sucky part though, is that I only have an hour in between jobs, and a lot of times, people at church seem to forget when I'm actually at that job, and that it's NOT my only job.

I've already made it clear to my games store manager that I want one weekend day a week off (preferably sunday). I am off weekends from the sandwich shop so that gives me one full day off weekly, which is very important to me. I only do the games store two times doing the week so I won't have to pull too many doubles.

yup did it two jobs at a restaurant* and one at a gas station-my schedule was:

                  Mon-fri buffet attendant 8am-4pm-40 hours
                  Mon-thur Hostess 5pm-11pm-24 hours
                  Friday hostess 5pm-10pm-5 hours
                  Friday-sun gas station 11pm-7am-24 hours

grand total of 93 hours per week

so yes on fridays and mondays I got no sleep.....

*same restaurant but since it was 2 different jobs with two different pay rates-no overtime-yes it was legal
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Definitely make sure you have one day a week off. I work 9-5 at my full time job, then 5-9 usually 2 nights a week, and one weekend day or night. Sometimes I work more, some less, depending on how busy we are, etc.

don't sweat the small stuff, I finally learned if something doesn't get done, i.e. laundry, cleaning, oh well, tomorrow is another day. I won't lie and say sometimes I'm not tired, but some weeks I'm good.

I've been doing it for 5 years, and am still surviving. Just take one day at a time.

I learned the hard way that 2 full-time jobs while being a full-time student was not the smartest thing I'd ever done. I never, ever want to go through that again...

Hopefully you have some time for yourself. Burnout sucks.

I'm currently down to just 45-50 hours a week between my two jobs (35-40 hours at the motel, and ~10 hours on the paper routes).

Was working 7:30-4 at my "full time" job, Monday thru Thursday, and also working at Lowe's some evenings, and most weekends.

I didn't have a day off for the entire month of May, at one time I was pulling my 32 plus an additional 30.

In June Lowe's moved me to a nightly position.

                        So I was working 7:30-4 M-Th, and 6-10 Sun-Thurs for a total of 52 hours.

I stopped at the beginning of this month because thankfully I got a new full time job.

From the time I was 18 till about 45, I always worked at least 2 jobs (I'm 50, now). Towards the end, there, I went 2.5 years, working 4 jobs, with NO days off. BUT I went from selling plasma to make ends meet, to buying a $15K truck for cash, and putting down a $20K down payment on my house, with another $20K left over for emergencies. I had NO life, and NO "me" time, nor any time to spend any of the money I was earning.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

Did the second job thing with the restaurant (as a Hostess) and seasonal tax office (as a receptionist). I didn't have a car but the fact that they were both close to my house and I was able to take that same bus back and forth to both made it easy on me. Needed the extra money since I wasn't making much since the restaurant was only open during dinner and it was less than 30 hours a week on about $7.50/hour while supporting more than one person in the house.

I am currently working two jobs. The office job is M-F 6am-10am, the fabric store job is whenever they schedule me. I just finished working a 47 hour week (October and December are the busiest months at a fabric store, as everyone is buying the makings for Halloween costumes and Christmas gifts) and haven't had a full day off since the beginning of October. I am getting the Saturday after next off, though, and I'm not coming in for any reason!
