  • So what happens when you...

    plagiarize somebody's recipe?

    And then write the author back and tell them they should be grateful you corrected their grammatical errors and the internet is public domain, so copyright law doesn't apply?

    This. Enjoy kids.

    <facepalm>

    There are times where the absurdity just speaks so much volumes that there's nothing to really add.

    This is one of those times.

      This is unfortunate, but reminds all of us of the importance of protecting our work. If you put something out on the internet (in blog form or in a post) that you want to protect, then you should clearly label it with your name, year, and the copyright symbol. If you really want to protect it, then print a copy and mail it to yourself. If you *really* want to protect something, then you request an official copyright. (I did this with my master's thesis.)

      The editor was right, they could have easily claimed the recipe as their own or put someone's name on it. Chances are it did need some editing to be fit for publication. By putting her name on it, they did show some degree of ethics. However, they certainly should have asked her for permission.

        Recipe Today is owned by Disney. Do you know how many lawyers Disney has that deal with nothing but trade mark & copyright?

          Hell, Disney is the reason that Congress keeps extending the life of a copyright (right now I believe it is the life of the creator + 75 years). Basically, they don't want Mickey Mouse to enter the public domain.

            Wow, they ripped off Disney? That takes balls. No brains, but a lot of balls. That's the equivalent to poking a very angry mother alligator guarding her nest with a three inch stick.

              I'm wincing inside at the editor's response that the article needed to be "cleaned up". The author was using primary sources, from what I gather, and leaving them as is for a REASON. To show the historical recipe in its entirety, but because the English language has changed, Ms. "Better-Than-Thou-So-Kiss-My-Foot" Editor said it had to be fixed

              >.>

              I'm really hoping Disney teaches that magazine the error of its ways. Repeatedly. Because by plagarizing that institution, they have REALLY screwed themselves over.
