  • 5 ways to piss off your bartender

    Linky here

Aww, I like my Long Island Iced Teas!!! Partially 'cause they are a lot of alcohol for a little money. But you know, the drunker you get me, the better I tip, so it balances out, right?

Long Island Ice tea is actually a very old punch recipe that has been altered (I say butchered) into a cheap cocktail. Old punch recipes followed what is called "the rule of 5" and it consisted of:

    1 part sour ingredient
    2 parts sweet ingredient
3 parts strong drink (alcoholic drink)
4 parts weak drink (non-alcoholic drink)
    +spice

The original long island ice tea is:

1 part lime juice and the bodies the juice was squeezed from
2 parts raw or Demerara sugar
3 parts Batavia Arrack or Gold rum
4 parts black tea (hence where the "iced tea" in the recipe name came from
    nutmeg to taste

As for the long island part, well, that was because the new cocktail was made in long island and carried a similar potency, if not taste.

and hey if it's on the menu then ... it doesn't matter if the barkeep dislikes making it.

and some places i've been to will charge per shot so if you order a multi-shot drink you're not really saving money.

Aww, the long island is my favorite! And I have never yet vomited from drinking. Or passed out.

This is why I don't go to bars. I only like girly mixed drinks. I don't need an attitude or someone refusing to make me one when it's on the menu.

Maybe Jester happen by and 'yay' or 'nay' this, but IIRC - Long Islands aren't that difficult to make.

It's alot of different liquor's, but it's all well and you just shake it up with cola.

Granted, it's been years since I've bartended - and I never did so in an upscale place, so maybe it's different there.

I'd much rather make a LI than any drink involving a blender.

Oh, and I've heard Mojito's are a total PITA to make, too.

              Wimp

My mother ran a nightclub/steakhouse in the 70s,high class place.

So this guy comes in one slow afternoon while Mom's covering the bar & asks for a pousse-café.So she makes this elaborate & complicated drink that's supposed to be sipped.

This guy picks it up,slams it & then says to Mom: "Make me another"

Now,Mom rarely used the F word, but she did then...

"Fuck you,I'll line up a shot of each one of those & charge you for 'em,but no way in hell will I make you another."

"Lemme talk to your manager little girl!!!"

"I AM the manager & you're outta here!!!"

Mom was,in the vernacular of the time,"A fox",in her 30s,attractive & knew how to dress & make herself up.She also knew how to wield the sawn-off end of a pool cue to great effect,as a couple of fellows had found out & that guy was about to.

Now that's class, Freddie. Your mamma knew how to make some fancy *cocktail **and was quite willing to back up the order of the world ***with force.
I want to be like that, and this is just another good example.

                  *possibly French
**when I don't expect bartenders to know much past Long Islands, really, no offense but there's more than a dozen bars within walking distance, and this town I live in is a college town despite appearances. Only restaurants with starting 50 dollar plates do I expect this from.
***ie fancy drink= drink it right

As I read it, the complaint about people ordering LI iced teas is just that it's so much alcohol in one drink that they don't order more. More bang for your buck. And that makes you cheap in the bartender's eyes.

I guess bartenders wouldn't like me much anyway, since I rarely drink more than one alcoholic drink when I go out. Usually I'm driving anyway, and I'll have one drink (if that) if I'm going to be there for a while and if I'm having food. If that's not the case, I'll have soda or something else non-alcoholic. When I used to hang out at the bar with Ex, they didn't even charge me for soda. (Though they made decent tips on Ex's multiple beers before I dragged his drunk ass home. Did I mention he's "Ex"?)

heh, normally I am the designated driver so I rarely ever drink while out.

I will make an exception when we hit Key West in Feb ... I can *not* show up in KW, loving rum and rum drinks, not go to Jesters bar and not try new to me and interesting rums ... Hubby will have to drive, or we will get a taxi =)

Hehe, I wish I knew of Jester when I was in Key West...I would definitely have looked him up. I always wonder if I saw him while I was there. That was about 5 years before I joined here, though (but I have established that Jester was indeed in KW at the time I was there).

We spent a lot of time at Fat Tuesday drinking icy slushy drinks and playing pool. I still have one of my cups.

Mojitos can die. I HATE muddled drinks.

Oh, and don't shake a LIIT. Stir a bit before adding the cola, but anything with carbonation should never be shaken. That's a tough lesson one tends to learn *quickly* the first time you're behind a bar.

Layered drinks can die also. I'm really good at them, but they annoy me.

Your mom sounds great. Exactly the kind of person who should be behind a bar.
