  • Thank You for Calling Hell, How May I Help You?

Okay guys, I need to take a deep breath because even though this was a while ago, I needed to really get it off my chest. I'm going to be writing an easier-to-follow and more polite version of this to actually send to the company (Dell) but I had to write this one to get it off my chest and really say how I feel. Keep in mind the events stated happened a while ago but I still don't have this issue resolved:

    To Whom It May Concern,

About three years ago, in order to be prepared for college, my father bought me an XPS ____ to do all my school work and creative work on. It was very nice for awhile, fast, convenient, light, etc. When I had a few problems setting up my printer I logged into the tech support chat and got fast service that was very helpful. I thought this would be a breeze.

That was before these three years went by and during them I had to reinstall my operating system by myself at least six times but maybe more; at this point I’ve given up trying to recall every time I’ve done it. Finally, my computer decided that it had had it. It had been about a month since the last time I’d reinstalled Vista and my computer decided that it needed an update. Like usual, I clicked the update and restart button and found out that that was a very big mistake (at this point I started wondering why I allow it to install ANY updates because those seem to be the times where it shoots itself in the head most often.) After going to the Geek Squad and getting all my un-backed up stuff on a CD, I took the doorstop home and attempted to reinstall Vista again. No dice. This time my laptop had decided that Vista was no longer on its agenda and it wanted to take a longer break from me.

So I got another hard drive from you guys, mailed the old one in, installed the new one by myself (I’m pretty handy for a girl) and after the associate I talked to checked it out and asked me how it was working, I thought I wouldn’t have another problem. Now this is where our story gets interesting. At that point, I was using my parents’ old desktop PC that doesn’t have any speakers. So I’d set up the little laptop to play Pandora. For the two weeks after I’d set up the new hard drive all it did was sit on the desktop’s tower and play Pandora. I swear it was the most expensive radio I’ve ever owned.

I took it home; it installed an update, and pow. New hard drive, meet your doom. Maybe just a little over two weeks and the same problem occurred with the new hard drive. I believe my exact words were: “I’m tired of not doing anything wrong.” So at my father’s insistence I called Dell again.

Now, I’m not exactly sure how it got to the way it did but let me just say, I haven’t called again after this call. At first it went alright, I explained the issue, how long I’d had the hard drive, what was going on, etc. At the end of that call there are several words that could possibly brush the surface of how I felt: Berated, belittled, confused, hurt, ignored, neglected, insulted. I don’t exactly know what kind of training these associates get but I think about the time your customer is weeping into the phone and repeating, “None of that makes sense, no that doesn’t make sense,” maybe they should start actually listening to what is going on with the computer and stop continuously repeating that we have a virus. From Pandora? No. He told me I had two options and two options only, I could reinstall my operating system AGAIN or I could get another hard drive AGAIN. Because those just worked so well before.

I managed to choke out that I would reinstall my operating system and hung up on him. I didn’t reinstall my operating system. I put my laptop on a shelf and it’s been there ever since, gathering dust. For the past few months I’ve been working on my brother-in-law’s HP and working off my external hard drive because I’m not dumb enough to trust any computer again. The HP, despite being over five years old and stuffed full of gamer crap works beautifully but the fact remains, it’s not mine and eventually I’ll have to give it back. I thought about calling you again but every time I would consider it I would get upset over the last time I called and decide that I’d rather go to the gynecologist than call your tech support again.

What do I want then? Well I don’t know if it’s covered under my warranty but I’d really appreciate an apology.

Better yet, how about you give me something better: Someone who can and will fix my damn problem.

    Thank you, Me.

    TL;DR:
My computer breaks every so often and Dell would rather yell at me than fix it.

Ok, Clean it up (take out the "handy for a girl" bits, etc,) make it direct and too the point, but do include the fact that you were literally in tears by the end of the final call, and that you're afraid of being treated that way again; then SNAIL-MAIL it certified/return receipt directly to Michael Dell (care of his corporate offices)

I know people that worked at Dell, and if they heard about this, would go through the roof, however for various reasons, most of them are no longer there

the other thing is, it may not have been the computer, but the OS, i've heard a lot of people say that vista is no bueno; have you tried installing Win7? just a thought.

I've never heard of anyone having these kinds of issues with Vista and it gets to the point where it WON'T ALLOW me to reinstall it again, so it's really literally the computer rejecting my reinstall. I don't have the money for Windows 7 and everyone around me has been saying, "Don't get 7 until you can get your computer to actually WORK."

So I'm just so confused. I just need someone to tell me what the hell is wrong with it and then fix it. I'm tired of people telling me to do the same thing over and over. When my Dad looked at it he said, "This screen looks familiar," and he called his coworker and asked what they did with their PC that did the same thing. They threw it out.

Even worse? They're the IT department. Literally the PC they had that had the screen mine gets was so far gone they couldn't figure it out and they had to just trash it.

I still have a warranty!!!! I SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THIS FIXED.

        yes you should;
I' m not IT - when it breaks, I take it to dad, and say "fix it?"
maybe its time to employ a few "SC-type tricks" you see, when applied correctly certain behaviors that SC's abuse can be effective, its up to you to use them responsibly, and only the ones that you feel comfortable using; to get the spineless manager to fold to you, you must think like the SC

I'm going to hate myself for this, but I suggest mentioning this on your facebook page, if you have one. Many companies keep an eye on social networks for complaints like this...knowing how many people use facebook and would see this complaint, they want to get it resolved quickly. Might be worth a try anyway.

At this point it is unclear whether you have a hardware issue or a software issue. I'm inclined towards the latter. Vista is notoriously unstable.

If you had the money for Windows 7, I'd go ahead and try installing that . . . assuming your 3 year old machine meets the minimum requirements. It probably doesn't.

3 years is about the life expectancy of a Dell made at the time you bought it. Dell wasn't making good machines as of the past 3-4 years . . . it's why that had to bring Michael Dell out of retirement to try and salvage the company.

I know you won't want to hear this . . . but it's really time for a new computer.

Try Habitat for Humanity or other used computer and only get it if it comes with Windows XP until you can afford a new computer and get Windows 7.

Is it the same Vista update that borks it each time? If so, then it might actually be the OS causing the problems, if there's an update that your computer finds incompatible for some reason. If not, then I agree that your computer is likely the problem.

This is one more reason why I'm glad I have my home-built desktop rather than a laptop. I'm not tied down to one company for replacement parts and not beholden to any one tech support for things that go wrong with it. If something goes kerplooie, I can hit up a place like Newegg for a replacement part and have things up and running again. Hubby's not so lucky with his dinosaur laptop.

If you're going to email Dell, may I suggest the EECB (Executive Email Carpet Bomb)? You can Google it and check out a lot of links on The Consumerist (http://consumerist.com), but here's the direct link for Dell info via The Consumerist:

                  http://consumerist.com/company/dell/

I've recently gotten into using PC hardware and running Mac OS X on it (doing it now with a 5 year old Asus motherboard and a Core2Duo 3.0Ghz processor), so there's always the Apple route without spending a lot of cash and having a stable OS.

I'm sorry I can't help you fix the actual problem with the machine, but a newer machine is more than adequate to run OS X, if you've ever wanted to go that route.

I'm going to second the idea that the update is causing an issue. Maybe see if you can uninstall the update that causes the issue. If that doesn't work, reload the OS again, then go into your control panel and disable automatic updates (details below, if needed) and set it so you have to manually tell it to install updates. Hopefully, you know which update to skip when the time comes.

You may want to call Dell back and ask if there are known issues with a certain update, also. It is possible that the phone tech will not have that information, or they may deny any issues. I've not heard good things about Dell support, frankly, but its worth a shot.

                    Turning Automatic Updates Off

                    -Open the Start Menu.

-Open Control Panel (right side, near middle of list, normally)

-Look for either Automatic Updates or Windows Updates, depending on OS

-Set it to Download updates for me, but let me decide when to install them, or the option to turn it off completely, and manually go out and get updates from the web.

-Now just install the updates not causing the issues.

Well that's the biggest problem, it's always a different update. This last time it was some stupid update for Internet Explorer 8 and the time before it was an update for something else. I really have no idea what's causing my problem because it's inconsistent as hell but the incidents kept getting closer and closer together. Every single time I call in and I say, "It installed an update" they say, "Well that wouldn't do anything." I STRESS that it was after it installed an update and they repeat over and over that it wouldn't do anything, they don't want to know what the update is or anything about it, they literally REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ME.

I don't have the money for Windows 7 and I CERTAINLY don't have the money for a new computer. I'm a college student, I DEPEND on computers to get my work done, I can't just run around without one or do all my school essays on my touchscreen phone (which seems to work better than any computer I've EVER encountered in my LIFE). My brother-in-law's laptop is slow as hell because he packed it with all sorts of games and whatever and I don't know how to clean it off without taking things out that ought not to be taken out...

My laptop does meet the requirements for 7, it's a nice laptop, it just...doesn't work. Other than as a doorstop anyhow.

I just don't want to do anything to that computer that will make it useless because I don't have the CDs to fix that one. Not like they helped with mine anyhow...

                        Re: XPS M1330

                        To Whom it May Concern,

On [date], I bought an XPS M1330; model number PP25L online from your Dell Online Store.

I am disappointed because this laptop has not performed as it should; it consistently does not turn on properly after installing automatic updates. These updates are always different in nature. I have spent an inordinate amount of time on the phone with your tech support and reinstalling my operating system (Vista Ultimate) repeatedly. In short, I’m tired of never getting my problem fixed, and the last time I spent time on the phone with one of your associates he berated and belittled me, leading me to shelf my product and use an older HP which was more reliable and user-friendly.

To resolve the problem I would like an apology for your associate’s behavior and I would also like someone, preferably an on-site tech, to diagnose my issue and provide a solution other than reinstallation of Vista or installing a new hard drive since neither of those options has proven satisfactory.

I look forward to hearing from you and to a resolution of this problem. I will wait until the 31st of May, 2011 before I seek help with this issue from a higher power. Please contact me at the above address or by phone [NUMBER].

                        Yours sincerely,

                        Miss [NAME]

I suggest deleting the above strike-out portion. An implied threat is never a good idea in a letter like this.

I am curious as to the identity of the "higher power" you refer to. I have had to refer to a "higher power" in the past to have certain things go my way, and anticipate having to do so again in the near future. I do this by petitioning my congressional representatives and various government agencies for assistance. I used to have to answer such petitions for a government agency, so I know how effective they can be. PM me if you would like details on how to proceed.

your laptop did what mine did with windows vista. it hated it. only hubs and i went DOWN a notch to xp, and that didn't help either. it would work fine for a week and then kaput. and reinstall all over again.

                              dell was very wrong
