Almost lost one of my guinea pigs last year to a very nasty tummy upset, she's fine now, but has a bit of a sensitive tummy to some foods so we have to watch she doesn't get the piggy runs again!
Today, I had to take piggy number 2 to the vets. She's had a squishy lump on her back for a while (simple fluid filled cyst) which all of a sudden got bigger & hard within the space of two days after it got nipped by one of the other girls and ended up infected.
Turns out it looks like she was on the verge of fly strike... a very horrible & quite often fatal condition. Luckily its been caught before the worst happened but the poor thing has a week of me flushing out a wound twice a day & hoping she drinks up all her water with antibiotics in it
At least she's still eating her head off & looking bright enough; and sulking as she's having to be kept away from the other two piggies so she's got no one to boss around.
We have three guinea pigs... I do hope that saying about things coming in threes doesn't come true
Meanwhile, I'm off to hang fly papers up and make sure the batteries are charged in my electric fly swatter!
