  • Not something I ever pictured doing...

    Need positive thoughts here, because I am on the final interview (of 3) for a job that is not temporary. The problem is, it is a job I never envisioned myself doing. I would be a insurance salesman..no not quite ..there is more involved then that..but basically .. that is what it boils down to. Next week at 1pm I go in for the final stage..have to take off work to do this..but if I pass I would going through training for 1 whole week, solid..without internet connection. 7 days..cut off from the whole world.

    So it is a job I've never done, one I am not sure I would be good at, and require being cut off from everything..
    Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.

    A week without Internet isn't fatal.

    I'm hip to the whole 'doing a job I never envisioned doing' thing - but in my case, it's sort of a 'backward' flow. If you're accepted for this new job, make sure you give as much notice as possible at your current job - no need to burn bridges, n'est pas?

    I think you'll be all right. The interview process is to gauge your suitability for a particular job - if it's clear you've never done this sort of work, then the job of the interviewer(s) is to determine if you have the aptitude. If they're going to train you for the job, you shouldn't have any worries. The first few days will be hell, of course, but that's true of ANY new job.

    Good luck!

        why the cut-off?
        the internet will miss you, have no fear.
        Are you going to get a commission, or ...?
        I hope you do well, Mytical. Best wishes!

          I'd say go for it. You may end up liking it in the long run.

          Good luck! ::waves pennants::

            Kabe's doing that right now, but I'm curious as to the cut-off as well. But a week's nothing. I worked summers at a Boy Scout camp. We were all jumpy by week one. By week two, full withdrawal. By week 8, you're in this lovely state of calm, actually. It's weird realizing how much of a hole you're in in terms of information sometimes.

              If I had a laptop still, wouldn't be cut off from the internet. I don't, however. It is near a two hour drive one way, and from what I understand the training is long hours. So I will be staying at a hotel for that time. As soon as I get a couple of checks coming in..I will probably be moving up there.

                Just a thought - if the idea of being cut off from the internet for a week is that disagreeable, go to one of those rent-to-own places and just rent one for a week or two.

                Alternately, you can often buy an older-model laptop on eBay for next to nothing. A couple of years ago I bought an IBM T23 laptop (1 Ghz, 512 megs of memory, 20 gig HDD, complete with Windows XP) for like $100, complete with DVD-reader drive. It's great for Internet access and watching movies when I'm stuck overnight somewhere.

                  7 days without internet makes one week.

                  Sorry, couldn't resist.

                  Good luck! I hope it works out.

                    @xaenon

                    *nods* My funds right now are tied up into surviving, and things like laptops are luxuries. Right now, no luxuries for me. I can make it a week without the internet.

                            A friend of mine got into that business. He later left the company he was working for (taking his clients with him), and started his own business. Doing quite well for himself.

                              $350 dollars. I will let that sink in for a moment, as I think everybody knows where this is going.

                              They want me to pay $350 dollars for training, and get reimbursed after 6 months of working for/with them. If I had that type of money, I would be doing great. *sighs*
