  • Rudeness in Church...

    * THIS IS NOT IN ANY WAY MEANT TO BE A RELIGIOUS POST OR intention to starting a war on religion. This is a post as to how there were some rude jerks at church...if this gets to be a religious debate please start your own on Fratching. Thank you :-)

This past sunday (easter) my wife played trumpet for the church near her parents. They had a children's mass where all of the children's groups performed various songs and skits, and then the "regular" mass. A group behind me who had no manners kept talking and talking throughout the mass, even during the pastor's speeeches. What irked me (personally) was the one guy bitching behind me that "that fat ass bitch should be playing a tuba" and I turned around and told him to be quiet and that was my wife. He kept talking throughout the whole mass but seemed quick to exit. Was I wrong in telling him to shut up?

I think you were perfectly in the right to tell him to shut up. Talking non-stop during mass is, IMO, right up there on the Rude And Annoying Scale with talking non-stop during a movie. Also, the comment about your wife? Totally uncalled for and asshole-ish on his part. So good for you for telling him off.

      Sadly, rudeness is everywhere.

And no, you were totally justified in telling him to be quiet. Of course, I'd have told him a second time if he persisted.

Doesn't matter the venue . . . rude is rude.

He should consider himself lucky he didn't get his face jamed INTO the trumpet until it popped out the other end.... the only reason people like this keep being rude is because nobody ever makes them feel bad for what they do, as they should.

That would have to have been a small face to begin with.

Also, I'm not religious, but even I know full well that in a church, if there's a service on, unless you're reciting prayers or singing a hymn, you generally sit down and be quiet.

As for the comment on your wife, the guy was a dickhead.

Not at all. You were quite right in defending your wife against that boor.

What I'm wondering is, where were the ushers and why didn't they step in?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

You were not wrong at all. Personally I'd have turned around and just stared at them if they kept talking.

You were totally right in telling him to shut up, and that comment towards your wife was totally rude and uncalled for. The guy was a complete arse (and I suspect a jealous one, as manypeople tend to speak low of people with abilities they don't have).

No, you weren't rude, that guy was a jerk! He probably talks at movies and concerts, too. What an ass.

You were completely justified in telling that arsehole off. He was a rude and judgemental jackass.

You shouldn't have told him to shut up. Considering the fact that he used the word "fat ass bitch" to describe your wife, you should have grabbed him by the collar, dragged him out the door, and have an ass-kicking free for all on his hide! I'm sure God would understand, and definitely your wife!

I'm Christian and I think you were right in telling that guy off. Although how funny would it be if you grabbed holy water, splashed it in the guys face and either yelled or whispered, "The power of Christ compels you to shut the hell up!!"

Alas, many churches don't have ushers. I'm attending one that doesn't and the talky ones seem to be a chronic problem -- and it's by no means only the younger ones who do it. Many are my age (middle-aged) or even older.

I love it! Be interesting to see if it works ...

The talking was rude but the swearing and name calling were just shameful. Good for you for telling them to be quiet and defending your lovely talented wife.

You called them out in a firm way without being nasty. You did it like Jesus would have. And I can't believe that guy used language like that in church. I mean, why was he even there?
