  • If your car isn't locked...

it didn't really get broken in to. Bonus points if your computer/GPS/tablet were left in plain view. No, I'm not responsible for that. You're an adult and perfectly capable of locking your car doors and removing valuables from plain sight. Unless you're not, in which case you'll need a licensed health professonal.

Also, no, I'm not going to catch the guy who did that. The police can do that. You didn't call the police? Well, how do you expect them to know that your electronics are even stolen?

Ooooh... I so want to hear the details behind this one.

Although, I do fear they will be about what's expected... aka; People are Idiots.

Ain't it the truth? I recall hearing about somebody here whose car was actually broken into; they took her cell phone, camera, either an iPad or a laptop (can't remember which) and at least one other electronic thingie. Why on earth would you leave that stuff inside the car....at the marina??? Go home and drop it off! Or leave it in the trunk (unless it's hot out, in which case see previous option). It doesn't excuse the thief, but why leave temptation out in plain sight like that?

Trunks actually stay relatively cool, even on a hot day. It's all that glass that makes the passenger compartment so hot.

One of my former coworkers found that out the hard way. Sometimes people will sell candy or other items as fundraisers for their kids or their own activities. People will either leave the items on their desks or on the community table, along with the envelope for the money. As far as I know, there haven't been any problems with this. I'd like to think that people in my department are smart enough not to jeapordize a good-paying job over some candy or a small amount of money.

However, this one guy was dumb enough to leave everything out over the weekend, when the department is empty, and we've had problems in the past with members of the cleaning staff stealing. I personally had my money stolem from my wallet while I was in the fitness center. After that, I started putting a lock on the locker I was using. Anyway, this guy came in Monday morning, surprised and furious at finding both the money and the candy gone.

what's worse is when people do shit like that and then act like every employee who was even near the car is now the "thief".

We had an issue at one of my commands that was a little similar.

The money (from the command ge-dunk store) was locked up in an office. HOWEVER everyone under the sun pretty much knew the keys to every. single. office. were located in the podium at the entrance, including the office that had the money. And this podium was NOT guarded when the building was closed. So pretty much, someone grabbed the keys and opened the office and took the money from the lockbox. At this point, even if the box was locked it's pretty much useless since it's one of those flimsy kinds that keep honest people honest.

Their "answer" to "fix" this was to scrutinize everyone who worked late. At the time there wasn't a night shift that I remember. If you weren't out by 3PM / 1500 you'd better have a damn good excuse. ... why they didn't just lock the money up in a better way, I don't understand but hey.... whatever.

Tis' far better to trust no one and be surprised by genuine honesty than to trust everyone and be surprised by genuine dishonesty....

Kinda like how this one person was telling me about the time they left their KEYS IN THEIR CAR while they went grocery shopping, and came back to find it gone... and when the cops finally found it, all the valuables inside were stolen too...

I sat there listening and nodding, expecting some big payoff, but that was it, that was the story.... I was supposed to be as shocked as she was that there are CRIMINALS in this world... who steal NORMAL PEOPLE'S stuff!!

She was shocked that I wasn't shocked...... as if crime like that only happens in those scary big cities...

Sigh, I feel your pain. It's trespassing and theft if you leave the car unlocked; not a breaking and entering; same if you leave a window open in the house and someone climbs in. And how many times are we WARNED by police to hide the valuables in a car? Especially around the holidays. Funny how many people want you to magically solve the problem without calling the police. Makes me wonder if they have something to hide...

Funny too how they want the business who owns the parking lot to reimburse them for the stolen items!

People who do dumb stuff like that never cease to amaze me. In the last day or two, a woman had her 100K Range Rover stolen from a local Target. It has a push start ignition, but she supposedly left her keys in the car as well. not sure if that means car or just house, but duh.

and a few years back some woman left her BNW unlocked at the gym, and inside was her cell phone, laptop, ipod and very expensive purse, with wallet, money, credit cards etc. SOrry, but if you're that stupid to a. leave al that in the car in plain sight and b. DON'T lock the car, then I can't feel sorry for yo\u

Not much to say... Person stopped by the office on a Tuesday, asking if we caught the person who broke into their car on Saturday night. Except for the aforementioned:
                    • Their car wasn't locked
                    • They left their stuff in plain view
                    • They didn't report it to the police
                    • I'm not the police
                    • They somehow thought that we should be responsible for keeping her stuff safe despite all of the above

The only place I'd leave my valuables in plain sight in my car would be at work. I work at a secure facility, with cameras EVERYWHERE.

I don't leave valuables in my car, anyway, but if I did, that's the only place where I'd do it.

We recently had a guy leave a bunch of expensive tools unlocked in the back of his pick up truck, and he was totally surprised when they were stolen during the night. And he seems to think it's the hotel's fault.

There have been a number of cases here of people leaving Christmas presents in their car, parked on a side street while they were out on the main road, doing some more shopping....and someone breaks in and steals everything. At least put the stuff in the trunk so they don't know it's in there, people!

I also recall the time someone at work left a couple of dollars on the counter in the ladies room while she went into a stall. Someone took the money and she left a snarky note taped to the mirror bitching about it. A friend of mine rolled her eyes upon reading the note and wrote on it, "Consider it a lesson cheaply learned." Yeah, a bit nasty, but honestly....leaving money lying out in the open while you're "indisposed"? If you don't have pockets, tuck the bills into your bra!
