  • Boss's PITA Girlfriend

I recently landed a new job at a chiropractor's office, leaving behind the frozen hell that was the yogurt shop. My boss, Dr. S, is a great guy. He really takes care of his staff and his patients. My coworkers are very nice too. At first, the biggest drawback I could find was that I would never have anything good to bitch about here at CS.

    The I met "the girlfriend."

She called today, said her name was "L," and that she wanted to see the doctor that afternoon. I pulled up the appointment calendar and asked for her last name, to which she abruptly responded, "I'm his girlfriend." She then said she was on her way. When I hung up and told my coworker, she just rolled her eyes and said that L often came in for free treatment, or just to visit with Dr. Boyfriend. My coworker then quickly left the office to make the deposit, not wanting to be stuck making awkward small talk until the doctor was ready to see his patient/girlfriend.

Then the girlfriend came in. She didn't pay too much attention to me, except to give me a couple of mini muffins she bought at a bake sale. Later Dr. S asked me if my encounter with her was okay, since she could be kind of annoying and light on the social skills. I said everything was fine.

This is only my third week on the job, and I'm still learning the office dynamics, so I'm not sure if the girlfriend's presence is going to be anything more than a minor annoyance. She was pretty presumptuous on the phone, but on the other hand, she brought me some muffins. Overall I get the feeling that she drops by way too often for everyone's liking, but the doctor is too whipped to draw any boundaries. I'll have more on this story as it develops.

But hey, at least I'm not this poor slob: http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/?uc_full_date=20120807

Meh, she may be okay. The *huff* "I'm his girlfriend" is fairly typical of all-important GFs calling to talk to their boy-toy by first calling the main business number. *shrugs* Only time will tell.

Just deal with her with cool friendliness.

All I ever get on the phone is:
Me: "xyz Co.! Can I help you?"
            GF: "Is he there???"
            Me: *blink, blink* Who?
GF: "It's meeee!! Is he there?"
Me: *lightbulb coming on* "Hold please."
            ** transfers**

This reminds me one incident where our dept. was covering another dept's phones. I get a call from a teen:

              teen: Is Joan there?
              me: who is this?
teen: *in a "I can't believe you asked that question" tone of voice* It's her daughter.
me: no, they are at a party.
teen: can you tell her I called?
              me: ok

dumbass, if you don't recognize my voice, why are you acting surprised I don't recognize yours?

Kinda hard to tell if this is a red flag or not. On the down side, the fact that he's even asking such a thing may point to previous problems. On the up side, the encounter did go fairly smoothly (hmmmm, muffins) and doc is not only conscious of the potential problem, but concerned enough about his employees to inquire.

I'd probably play it by ear, but maybe give my attitude a nudge in the 'be extra nice and courteous' direction ---could be she's been abrupt in the past because other staffers pre-assumed she'd be a PITA?

On the other hand I've had first encounters with notorious SCs (according to my coworkers) that, at the end of, I think to myself "hey, X wasn't so bad after all. Maybe they're exaggerating."

Only to find as time passes that they were spot on. Usually the customer gets suckier and suckier in each encounter. Sometimes they can be worse with regulars than with new people.
