  • Craigslist whine of the day

What is with people? I was selling kid's stuff on CL, and 3 times I got 'is it still available', followed by silence when I say yes. One of them even called, set up a pick up time and no-showed. Fourth was the chrm this time, but WTF?

This is a big pain for me because I like to give the item to the first person to contact me - so when they go dark, I have no idea what's going on and have to wait a day or two before I can contact the next person. Uggg, so irritating.

I get that with my Etsy site too.

"Oh hey is this quilt ready to ship? It's awesome and perfect and I love it/want to love it and squeeze it and name it George. "

"Yes it is. If you pay with paypal, I ship it within 24 hours."

    And then silence.

People have been doing that for years with newspaper ads, so it unfortunately it follows that they do it now with online stuff, too. People are idiots.

If they just say "do you still have this", without even naming the item, it's usually just someone phishing for valid email addresses. I even put in my ads, to be specific or they may get treated as spam.

But yeah, I've had those times where I email back and forth half a dozen times about various features, price, etc, they're sounding like they can't wait to get it, then nothing.
Worse yet are the ones who set up a time to pick it up or meet, then never show.

I think they have something come up they have to buy, decide they can't afford it after all, and don't have the common curtesy to simply say "nevermind".

Either that, or they're being abducted by aliens. Someone should look into that.

        Madness takes it's toll....
        Please have exact change ready.

I hate when people don't think your time is valuable.

I'm trying to sell my mom's car on CL. I get an email asking for info. I send info. same person asks for more info. and more pics. Then the person calls me. Then he/she asks the same questions. Finally the person who called me reveals that he is the cousin/brother-in-law/child of the person who emailed me. Why didn't you tell me that when you called me? And why didn't the person who emailed just forward you the info? I had one guy ask me to take my car to his mechanic (cost me about $10 in gas to drive there and home again) and the mechanic told me the car was fine. Guy never called me back (at least he paid for the check-up with the mechanic). Another person was asking questions. I finally asked if she was going to come by and she said, "oh we are going to look at another car," and never contacted me again. Also, I'm selling the car for $10K. Person emails me saying "I'll pay you $3K." WTF?
Time! Time! Time is what turns kittens into cats.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

Ah, lowballers. They figure that the worst you can do is say "no" to their ridiculously low price, so they do it. Never mind the fact that it's disrespectful and makes them look like an ass.

Sold my motorcycle a few years back, then sold all the gear on CL. What a pain. The worst was a guy who wanted a pair of winter riding gloves, that I paid $45 for when new & was selling for $10. He wanted me to deliver them to him in another city 25 miles away!!

Now I make it clear that the first person who shows up with the asking price gets the item, NOT the first person to contact or the first person to ask to have it held. You can't make it for 3 days? Best email me in 3 days to see if I still have it.

Don't get me started on Freecycle.... had to move in winter, had to get rid of a bunch of large heavy items (mostly patio/garden stuff) that would not be in demand for months. Put it on Freecycle and had nothing but problems. People would get the address to come get something, not show up when they said they would, but show up at another time when I wasn't home. Then they'd take anything not nailed down. The worst was someone who wanted a big outdoor teak table. They tried to also take a heavy concrete garden statue, but couldn't carry it, dropped it and damaged it. The people who wanted the statue showed up and blamed me. I could go on... but you get the idea. CL and Freecycle are the epicenter of the SC universe in my opinion.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

i'm thinking ... perhaps some of them may have also been scammers who were hoping to trick you into sending the item before they paid?

I've quit using CL over these kinds of issues. It's just too much of a hassle.

I take most stuff to Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity and get the tax write off for charitable donations instead. I will probably come out even on cash, even if I have to wait for tax season, and it's far less hassle since they take everything, no questions asked.

Yes, we should get in touch with the aliens and ask them to stop bringing those sort of people back. Not too worried about what they DO with them.... just keep them, please!

SAME HERE... nothing on Craigslist but tire kickers, nose pickers, scammers, and wannabes

plus the mouth breeders have not bought a used car since before cash for clunkers. They are clueless to how much a good, safe used car is worth, according to kbb.com

And of course, now I've got a nonpaying bidder on Ebay. After I open a case they finally respond that they'll pay. What a world.
