  • I might have just stopped a scammer

    This'll be pretty quick.

About 20 minutes ago the phone rang.

Me: <Hotel Name & Location> this is SC, how may I help you?
SC: Can you connect me to <Room #>
Me: Can you please tell me the name of the person in that room?
    SC: Does it matter?
Me: I need a name to transfer, not just a room number.
    SC: OK <hangs up>

    Yep, I think I prevented a scam.

I've gotten so many of those.

    Sometimes they take this turn:
Me: "Do you have the name of the registered guest?"
SC: "No, I don't know it. They just told me to call that room."
Me: "So you don't know who you're calling? Why are you calling them then?"
    SC: "Erm..." *click*

As an additional bit of humor, the Room # he mentioned was unoccupied.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of scam would be involved here? Is the caller trying to scam the hotel or are they targeting guests?

A common scam is once they get through to a guest room they will pretend they are the front desk or credit card company and say there was a problem with the transaction and start asking for CC info/other personal info. If you ever get a call like this when you're in a hotel, just tell the caller you'll come down to the front desk to settle things. That will shut them down.
