That's not 50 feet!

There are signs around the entrances at a nearby mall I wander to occasionally which state: "No smoking within 50 feet of mall entrance- The Management"
I have now stopped to stare at that sign at least three times because people have been standing beneath it, smoking. Now, I'm no good with measurements without a ruler, but I sincerely doubt they'd post those signs if they were already 50 feet away.

Usually, I stop walking and stare at the sign, then the smoker, then back to the sign. Today marks the first time the smoker's taken notice of me doing so.
M: Me
S: Smoker

S: "What?"
M: "See the sign?"
S: *garbled words, most likely to the effect of: "It's raining, I'm not standing in the rain to smoke"*
M: *thinking* "And yet, you have an umbrella in your other hand." *grumbledina as I walk away*

I've seen people do that in front of hospitals, literally standing 5 feet from the door when the signs all state there is no smoking on hospital property.

my mother works for the government, and they now have no smoking in and around all offices (no smoking within 15 feet of any entrance)

the workers were so bad about standing right beside the door and smoking (so the smoke would woft back inside, they had to paint a big thick yellow line around the staff entrance of some of the offices and then write up any workers smoking within that line

One of the buildings at my college has an outer door and an inner door and a glassed in area in between. I've seen several speshul snowflakes standing INSIDE the glassed area to smoke and blow the smoke out the outer door. One time I made a big to do visibly holding my breath, doing the cough and wave my hand in front of my face thing....either they were too stupid to get it (which wouldn't surprise me), or they ignored me (also wouldn't surprise me).

Graaaah. My bus station has huge "no smoking" signs every 10 metres.

Nary a week goes by I don't see someone standing UNDER one of these signs, smoking.
Even the bus drivers do.

I've always wanted to put a heat-sensing array (like an air to air missile) on a pan/tilt/zoom camera so it would swing around, snap a mugshot...

I understand it is an addiction, but at the hospital???? Really? Someone could have a serious reaction to the smoke!! jeez. Talk about selfish.
