A study concludes that a lack of negative feedback breeds over-confidence. The study specifically focused on joke telling and political opinions, but I bet the same applied to the average SC:

Just proves the old adage..Power Corrupts, and Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Which is why many people, once they have power..become corrupted. Nobody wants to tell them 'No'...and every idea they have is a great one. Soon they become convinced they can do no wrong..and it spirals down hill from there. Every good leader needs a second in command that will not only tell them when they are wrong, but smack them down a peg or two when needed.

Is that why I always loved in when Saavik would remind Kirk of the rules in the Star Trek movies? (And she'd turn out to be right, actually.)
