Okay no more suspense. Inebriated customer did:

::: wait for it :::

A and D. Yes, stared at me dumbfounded for a few minutes, then handed me all of his cash and put $0.25 (TWENTY-FIVE CENTS!!!!!!!!) on his debit card.

Just when you thought it was safe to back in the water (cookies for reference)

Jaws II

Also, I do that. I feel really sucky now. This is usually because by the time I resort to cash my debit card is usually empty. So i have had 50 cents in my account, 9.55 in cash, and the total has been 10.01.

I have also checked my bank account on my smartphone while in line because the total purchase MAY be more than I have in my account by a couple of cents. I feel bad now.

I'M SORRY!

Speaking personally, I have no problem in splitting the transaction however the customer wants, provided they give me adequate warning (you already put the card in the machine? sorry, I can't take your coins now); on a business level though, anything less than a pound is hardly worth us processing due to the fees involved, so I'll occasionally "make up" a few pence if it'll get things done quicker - in the long run, I'm saving the company money even if I'm short 10p or 20p later.

No, don't be sorry. The difference is that you were not inebriated.

We all get caught short now and then. But really - putting $0.25 on your debit card just so you could get the TWO packs of cigarettes is just dumb (in my opinion, and I'm a smoker!) I would have felt differently if it had been baby formula, or diapers, or any number of "necessities". But for an additional pack of smokes? Not so much.

Usually if I know I'm gonna have to pay in part-cash, part-card I'll run it by the cashier to make sure it is not going to pose an issue. 9 times out of 10 it is no problem, the 10th time the machine is out of order, in which case I'll alter my purchase so I can pay all of it using cash.

At least he didn't pay in cash, put the rest on his debit, then ask for cash back.
