In the event that a term or word used in a derogatory manner to describe children is not on the list on the first page of the thread does NOT automatically mean it's okay to use in a thread.
If you're in doubt over a term or word, don't hesitate to contact a member of the mod team and ask. Sometimes it's better to err on the side of caution.Human Resources - the adult version of "I'm telling Mom." - Agent Anthony "Tony" DiNozzo (NCIS)

Bumping this again for our new members who may not have seen it. No one's in trouble, but I know we have a lot of these things in here and they tend to get buried after awhile.Sometimes life is altered.

And it's time to give this one yet another bump. For some reason, we seem to be seeing a lot of these from people who have been here long enough to know better, just like with the excessive quoting and smiley/image-only posts.Sometimes life is altered.

In the course of a discussion among the mod team, we developed a rule of thumb on this topic.
If you're discussing the child's existence, derogatory or critical terms are totally inappropriate.
If you're discussing the child's behaviour, appropriate adjectives are fine.
As an example: "Had a child in the shop today who was a total brat, and his useless mother did nothing to control him."
The reasons that's okay: the description of the existance of the child was fine: 'a child'. The term 'brat' was clearly a description of behaviour. Just to make it even better, the final phrase in the sentence makes it clear the mother was at fault.Seshat's self-help guide:
1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Looks like we have to bump this one again. OK people, it's one thing when a new member does it, and doesn't know any better. It's quite another when it's someone who's been here long enough to know better, or worse yet, someone who's been warned about this before.Sometimes life is altered.
