As a virus, its preferred environment is inside suitable cells (the respiratory tract in this case). It can also persist intact within a drop of water, until the water evaporates (the various durations measured on those cruise ships was linked to how long the water would last). If air (smoky or not) comes in direct contact with the virus, it's already doomed.
