So I'm not a regular around these parts, but I've lurked, posted a few times, and hated my job a ton.
I was pulling in two jobs for over a year and a half. One at a bank, the other at the Bullseye (as I call it "The Red Circles of Hell"). I had been with the Bullseye for over 8 years when I finally left. So for this to all happening, it was rather shocking.
It started about 2 months before Black Friday. I was pulling another 16 hour Saturday, 45 days straight with no days off, and about 45 to 50hrs a week. We were having our nightly "screw around time" or as the managers called it a "huddle" when we were informed that we were opening at midnight for the first time ever on Black Friday. The HR manager was telling us all of this that night and when he said "When does everyone want to work?" I made sure to tell him "as early as I can, I'll have to work at the bank that day as well". He nodded and wrote it down and later that night I made sure he knew to get me in for the 12am shift so there would be no interference with my primary job at the bank.
You see, the only day I really couldn't work is Fridays at the Bullseye because the bank is open from 9am to 6pm meaning I get out between 6:15-6:30pm. There isn't a 4hr shift that I could work at the Bullseye but since it's Black Friday and I knew this in advance, I made sure this was taken care of in advance! Even the bank worked me as late as they could to make sure that it would not interfere with the Bullseye because my bank rocks like that.
Flash forward to the Friday before Thanksgiving week. I get a text from my co-worker at the Bullseye that the schedule is finally up (talk about cutting it close) and I work 4-12. No biggie I have to be at the bank at 1, so it works out great. It's not what I requested, but whatever. That Saturday I'm pulling another 16hr day and I am talking to my co-workers when they drop the bomb. I was thinking 4am to 12pm, it was a 4pm to 12am shift! Um HELLO? I have to work at the bank until 6:30pm! This is NOT going to work! So I quickly go check my schedule and the Bullseye decided to toss my availability out the door for the whole WEEK and schedule me 30hrs all outside of my availability!
My Manager isn't in so I leave her a long note in her mail box about the issue, and told her that I can make arrangements for most of the days but that Tuesday I had a class that I couldn't skip and Friday I NEED to be earlier that day but I would TRY to see if someone at the bank would trade me shifts but that was unlikly. I even attempted to find someone to cover my shifts at the Bullseye to help them out (I found one for that Tuesday). Monday comes around and I talk to my co-worker at the bank who decides that she can't switch me shifts so I'm screwed. As soon as I got home, I called my manager:
Me: Hey, I left a message in your mail box on Saturday, did you get it?
Her: No I never checked it.
Me: Ok well here's the run down... *blah blah blah* So I won't be able to make it into work on Friday until at the earliest 7pm. Is there any way we can make an arrangement so that I can work maybe earlier or a split or...
Her: Well I'm sorry but if your not on time, your going to just have to take the consequences. You should have informed someone eariler about your scheduling issues.
Me: Wait... What? I did! I informed the manager in charge of HR who was asking us about when we wanted to work 2 months ago and I even spoke to you about it. I haven't even been available on Fridays for a year and a half now!
Her: You know better, you should have spoken to me. I'm the one that does your scheduling. Besides the HR person left and you know that
Me: Um, actually I didn't know until the day he left and I've ALWAYS talked to the person in charge of HR for issues like this.
Her: Well tough luck. You have to work it or else. You can come in 3 hours late, but it will be a no call no show. (*NOTE* A No Call No Show on Black Friday = Termination)
Me: But I'm telling you NOW that I can't be in for that!
Her: Tough.
Me: *slams phone in her ear* *Dials Corporate*
Me: Hello *explains everything that just happened*
Corp: Well I'm sorry, Can you speak to the Store Manager?
Me: Um, no. That is why I'm calling you. The store manager is about as bright as a box of rocks and about as corrupt as you get (all truth)
Corp: Well theres nothing that can be done. You can check the handbook to see if there is anything in there but besides that...
Me: WAIT JUST A SECOND. I'm calling you because I was just threatened by my manager to be fired because of the fact they have decided that I can work when ever they want me to work even though I've already told them I couldn't in advance? How is this right?
Corp: Um... um... well... um... you can file a complaint...
Me: Forget this. 8 years and this is what I get. Thanks a lot.
The next day I walk into the bank and the woman that I asked to switch me shifts decided she could after all So I'm pulling a 18hr day on Friday and a 18hr day on Saturday and a 10hr day on Sunday Great. Total hours for that one week: 68.5hrs (not including my class I was taking as well)
Black Friday is here, and it is just as wonderful as you can guess. My co-workers at the Bullseye are all grumpy because there are only 4 of us there to clean up the mess (yeah in past 7 years we have closed with 6-7 in my department). I get my departments done in a record amount of time 4 hours for 3 departments. The whole store is doing well so I decided to ask a harmless question which I knew the answer to but heck, it's worth a shot! More so since I had a 18hr day the next day.
Me (on the way to lunch): Hey Manager!
Her: Yeah
Me: We are doing so well over on our side of the store. If we are good, do you think I could leave when the store closes instead of staying around to push reshop? I've got to be at the bank at 7am and then work here until 1am
Her (extremely rudely): Wait, WHAT? NO way!
Me: Ok, just thought I'd ask. This is why I don't work Fridays in the first place...
Her: Well why didn't you talk to someone before hand about this. You should be on top of things like this. It's unfair to everyone else if I let you leave early...
Me: As I said, no harm in asking. And I did talk to someone about it last week and she started yelling at me as well...
Her: You know what, I don't want to hear about that crap. You know what, just for asking you can stay until midnight with me alone.
Me: Whatever you say
And I walked upstairs, grabbed my coat and told my co-workers I was
I don't know. Seems like I was going out of my way for them and it was still just not enough. Most of my managers were younger then I am (26) and right out of college trying to prove themselves. I kept getting updates through other people that were still there. After I left, I heard at least 12 others walked out over the next 2 weeks and that is just what I heard from 3 others. I've never seen that in my years of being there.
So that's how I left the Bullseye after 8 long, stressful years.
