So yesterday I was not in a very good mood; I have some personal stuff going on and a very good friend of mine recently got fired from the store we work at. It's just been a difficult time overall lately. So I'm trying to be cheerful with customers and just get through my day and it's not that busy for a Saturday and then THIS guy comes through my line.....
He has some ad matches, which since I am familiar with some of them this week I match the prices, and then he rattles off a bunch of prices from one other particular store in our area, but I don't recognize them so I ask him "Where are you getting these prices from?" as I start looking through my ads. He says "Oh they're at <Local Store> but they're not in the ad, they're just at the store."
I politely explain to him that we only match prices that are in the paper ad, we don't match in-store prices because we have no way to verify them. He says "I know you send people to the other stores, I want a manager." So I said I'd get a manager and be right back. I go find a CSM and luckily I find Kitty, who is AWESOME and always has our backs. I mentioned what the guy said and she tells me that we used to send people to the other stores but we don't do that anymore. She and I come back to the register and she starts to help the guy and he says something like "Your cashier here had an attitude, and I don't understand why she won't do my price matches and..." blah, blah blah. I said "Sir, I didn't have an attitude with you, I was just -" and he interrupts me with "Yes, you did, just admit it," or some such remark. I said "Well I'm sorry but that wasn't my intention -" and he interrupts me again with "Well look at the damn ad!" and that's when I lost it.
I muttered something to my CSM like "I gotta go" and I walked away. I headed to customer service and hid back behind there where we put all our returns and I just lost it, started crying. One of the gals came out of the cash office and got me a tissue and then my Zone Manager stops by and asks me if I'm okay, if I need a break and I told her it was my lunchtime so she said to go ahead and go to lunch.
As I'm headed to the back to clock out, I notice something weird in my eye so I check my mirror and sure enough it seems I've lost a contact lens. Pissed me off! Because I just put these in at the beginning of the month and I can't afford to buy any more right now so I have to call my husband and ask him to bring me my glasses and I have to toss my other contact lens away because it's useless now. On top of all of this, I also had to call one of my daughter's friends' houses because they're supposed to have a sleepover as I'd been having trouble getting ahold of them the day before. I managed to get that done without crying like a baby through the phone but when I called my husband I sobbed some more.
So then I head back up front to go outside (I smoke and the break area is at the front of the store), and there's my CSM Kitty and she's brought my ads and stuff to me (although I'm missing one of them and I was kind of irritated because it had a coupon for $1.50 for a gallon of milk which I was planning to use today) and she says "I'm going to break and you're coming with me!"
We head outside and she says "That guy was a jerk! You did the right thing. I said she's one of my best and she knows her ads." And she laughs her hard laugh and I love it and I love her - she's close to my mom's age so to me she's kind of like that fun aunt or the mother hen at work She does, she is the first one of the CSM's to have our backs, to say how great we are doing, and she knows how to put a customer in their place without getting herself in trouble.
I told her I would have yelled at that guy if I hadn't walked away, and that I've just had some other stuff going on lately that's bothering me and she just says it's okay, and again that I did the right thing. My husband gets my daughter to the sleepover and brings me my glasses and the rest of the day is bearable.
Fast forward to this morning though, because when I woke up I found my other contact lens...still in my eye.....
